Question about the Ford Diesel

There are allot of Ford lovers here in this county. I keep seeing folks with their bombed out fords, but they sound like . What are they doing to their exhaust that makes them sound like their running on only 2 cylinders? They make a distinctive flapping noise? I would be embarrassed if I had the sound of a duck coming from my tail pipe. Just Wondering.

There's alot of new ones here, not really bombed, though. The 6.0 sounds like its made of tin foil.

I think more than anything is that it's simply the sound of a V-8 with a turbo for a muffler. Not sure on the firing order on the Internationals, but firing order has a lot to do with the exhaust note as well. Most american v-8's have 2 cylinders that fire back to back---5 and 7, so they have that 'glug-glug...glug glug...glug glug' kind of sound, especially as the idle speed lowers. Most european v-8s, for instance, don't have adjacent firing cylinders, so they're silky smooth and, well, just don't sound like an american v-8. I'll take 6-in-a-row any day, thank you very much

I haven't heard the sound you are referring to. When I owned a 6.0L, there was a time when I ran it without the muffler . . . . . it sounded like a 777 jet. Too loud . . . . . put a Magnaflow on it and it sounded pretty good. It always had kind of a "tinny" sound to it. I can spot one a mile away . . . .literally.

The duramax is a V-8 but sounds nothing like the powerstroke, I suppose that's b/c the alumminum heads in the duramax...

I think as far as sound of a diesel pickup goes, the Dodge Cummins wins hands down. 2nd is the Duramax, 3rd the Ford 6.0L, and 4th the Ford 7.3L.

The 7.3L has that fluttering sound out of the exhaust. I have read that it is the turbo that causes that sound.

Also, the Ford 6.0L has aluminum heads ( I am pretty sure) so I dont think thats why the D-max sounds better.

It is a strange sound to say the least. Like a single cylinder at a very low rpm. pap pap pap pap. I only notice it with people who have upgraded the exhaust and what ever ells.

The Cummins sounds like a real diesel. Sorry but I'm Biased!
I pass friends on hwy 9 and they tell me that my truck sounds like a big rig. Especially now that I have upgraded the turbo and have a straight pipe.

When ever I see other Dodge trucks I make sure to roll down my window to hear it growl past me. Its therapy in a world of so many vehicles.

If you think the 6 Oh sounds funny, you should hear a V-10 with true duals . It sounds like a straight piped gas inline six. I prefer the sound of a cummins as well!!! But dad has a duramax, and it sounds pretty good to me. Sam

It is because of the firing order 6 and 8 fire one after the other. Right next to each other on the drivers side bank.

A Northstar has the same firing order. Listen to one of them sometime and you can hear the same "flutter" just not as pronounced as a straight piped 7.3 Powerstroke.

Right you are! And even if it did this would not contribute signifigantly to sound - pitch changes, etc. People have also thought that 4-valve engines verses two valve would make a signifigant differance, and on the Cummins it seems to, (along with the VP injection pump) but most engines it does not.

The sound you are referring to "sounds to me" like the VGT or Variable Geometery Turbo. It's quite noisy, especially upon sudden throttle release. it's also possibly due to the ICP (Injection Control Pressure) pump on top of the engine, just under the VGT turbo.
