I had a 1982 GMC P/U for ~11 years. I bought it with a bad injection pump at 205,000 miles. The injection pump was replaced three times in those 11 years.
I traded that GMC in on my Dodge with 405,000+ miles on the odometer.
That was a good truck. The engine well out lasted the truck.

Things I found with that truck:
Ate alternators,
Rotary style injection pumps on those GM engines are inferior,
The engines are not power houses, but I was still getting ~17mpg when I traded her in,
You must keep up on the glow plugs or they will swell in and break off in the upper chamber,
There are two styles of 6.2L's:
1) noted by a "C" in the vin
2) noted by a "J" in the vin
As I understand it, the "C" came with EGR and standard valves. The "J" had no egr in the intake and had hardend valves.

I had good luck with that truck and can only hope my Cummins will last as long.

Just like everything else, if you take care of it, it will take care of you.

I mentioned to one of my students (i am high school teacher) that I was buying the suburban and i have already had 3 kids in auto classes offer to sell me a 350 engine and 1 kid said he would buy it(he wants to make a mudd truck out of it) Don't know what I'll do with it, but I go to pick it up next friday. Hopefully all will be fine and I have me a new toy Thanks for all the information. I love this site, it is very useful.

Just remember if you swap in a Chevy Engine, you will need a Chevy Tranny. Those engines use a different bolt pattern bellhousing than a Chevy engine does.

The 6.2l diesel engine is the exact same bolt pattern and motor mounts are the exact same place as any Chevy gas engine. It is a direct bolt in.

the old 5.7 diesel was made from a 350 olds gasser and some folks are get them confused I think

I had a '85 chevy pickup ,4x4 with auto. I put 700,000 + hard i mean very hard miles on it with very little problems. Always carried a fuel tank with 125 gallons of diesel, my cross-over tool box full of tools, and other parts in the box. I worked for a large farming operation spread over 150 miles and that pickup was doin about 70 down the road and across corn rows!! The best truck I ever owned. Pulled everyting i could chain to it ...42' disks down the road to pullin a load semi with a pup 40 miles to a repair shop ( highway patrol couldnt believe I was able to do that!! lol). Other gauys would drive it around the operation also , it was never babied but always serviced and checked over. The thing that did it in was one of the workers changed the oil for me and didnt put oil back in it and he drove it back to the field for me. When I heard the clatter I was in a very VERY bad mood. But got my cummins now!! WOOHOOOOOOO!!

If it has a chevy bolt pattern trans, and the diesel goes, I'd either put a big block chevy in it or swap transmissions and put a cadillac 500 in it. If it has a BOP pattern (unlikely) and the diesel goes, just put a cadillac 500 in it. That will probably pull harder than the diesel, and will certainly pull harder than a 454 chevy. Better mileage than the 454 too, from what I hear. For the price, you probably can't go wrong with the truck.

i used to put olds 455's in my engineless pickups,those 454's generate some major heat under the hood,the olds had more low end torque,ran cooler and got way better milage.only downside was you had to change trans too.but most big 98's already had the perfect trans,they actually were a pretty easy swap,just grab the frame mounts from the 98 and then use 442 mounts on the engine,made it set lower,and in she goes.

He wanted me to just pay him and take it on home! I told him that I had printed off a lost title application form for him to fill out and that I would take it then, Now he is telling there may be a problem getting a title, because it has his ex-wife's name on it and they aren't on speaking terms!

how is his exwifes name listed,if its john and jane doe then she has to sign but if its john and/or jane doe she doesn't.but if it's strictly in her name your gonna have to go thru her.

If I understood him right..the divorce was recent and the title has both names so it will take both names to sell it. I am starting to wonder if he isn't just starting to have second thoughts on selling it. I told him I have to know by this weekend if I'm buying it.
