Here's my take

I think the cummins 6 will some day go the way of the Ford 300-6. The problem is that most people think V-8 is more power full then a 6. I know better so do many of you. The Ford in line 6 went away because most folks getting trucks were/are using them as passanger cars. So when you put a low RPM high torque Ford 6 with an auto transmission it seemed like a dog compaired to Chevy's V-6. Lower torque higher RPM would move when you stepped on the gas. I hope I'm wrong! But as has been pointed out most folks dont understand the raw torque of the cummins 6. Even folks that you would think should know better like the guys pulling RV's. they still think they have the better deal with a V-8. I test drove the Chevy and the first thing the salesman said was go ahead and get on it. It took off like hell 0-60 in no time! however it didnt have 15000 lbs behind it! so as long as folks can be fooled I worry about our our inline 6.

308 inch 6 cylinder in the early 50's that won stock car races all across this country with a heavy body car. Had a couple of them and I could run the wheels of my friends v8 fords.

I dont think the cummins will change, dodge knows better.

I doubt it as far as the Cummins I6 going away. If that happens I truly think that Dodge won't have a leg left to stand on. Ask a lot of Dodge owners why they bought a Cummins/Dodge and most of them will probably tell you for the engine first, and everything else follows. Ask a lot of Powerstroke owners if their engines blew and had their choice of an engine to put back in and I bet a surprising number would opt for the I6 Cummins. Same thing for Duramax drivers. They have a great engine going, but I bet quite a few would also bow to the throne.

I know its been said before but you never see a duramax or a powerstroke converted dodges but there are alot of fords and chevys converted to the all and powerful cummins.

This is true. I have seen quite a few swaps of PSD's into older Ford trucks, as well as Duramaxes swapped into older GM trucks, but it seems the Cummins swap is the most popular.

The Fabulous Hudson Hornet?

Marshall Teague, who became synonymous with Hudson performance in the Fifties, won 12 of 13 AAA events in 1952. Overall, Hudson won 27 of the 34 NASCAR Grand National races in 1952, followed by 22 of 37 in 1953, and 17 of 37 in 1954.

I think it's cool when I say " it's just a six cylinder"

Never forget the day I stopped to pull a guy out of a snow bank. I had passed him up by about 100 feet so I put it in Reverse stomped the go pedal and then pushed the clutch in to coast faster than reverse would allow. The guy said " WOW... MAN that there is pure american horsepower.... What ya got in that thing. I told him a 6 cylinder and he didn't believe me.
If they don't know what's under the hood, they aren't my type of people.

Cummins is making a V6 & V8 diesel for Dodge to use in SUV's and the 1500 pickup and it should be ready in either model year 2009 or 2010.

Considering that the 5.9 and 6.7 cummins are medium duty motors and the V8 configuration is almost if not completly gone from the medium duty and heavy duty market I for one don't forsee the inline 6 desighn going any where. Also isn't the V8 for the 1500 a light duty motor with hp and tq numbers close to what the 5.9 was in the late 80s early 90s?

My dad was a truck driver during that era and was also a diesel mechanic. He felt the cummins 350 was the best out there and held it in the same reverence gas guys do the chevy 350. But I gotta tell ya, as a kid, my favorite was his old Marmon V12... I got a big kick out watching him pass everything going up Donner pass.

On a gas engine note, as far as the 6 cyl. thread goes, I had an old Nissan patrol with a I6 and put over 400,000 miles on the first engine. I did have to replace a cam at 275,000 but that was it. And the cam came out of a chevy 235 or 250.(don't remember now) I taught my 1st wife to drive a stick in that thing and one time she put it in 3rd gear instead of 1st, accidentally sidestepped the clutch and the thing lurched and bucked and kept going. Now that's torque! I looked over at my trusty tach and it was barely registering off of zero. Great engine. But, just like our Cummins, it didn't like to rev over 3500 rpms!

people think v-8's are all powerful, because they are!!!

but only in corvette's, Camaros, GTO's, etc. LS1 and LS2 LS6 yadda yadda yadda

when it comes to diesel trucks "SIX IN A ROW, MAKES IT GO"
and naturally makes hella torque and decent fuel mileage.
