General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

People think 6 cyl is small for a diesel...

Maybe you should have those folks look at this next time they tell you about your "little 6-cylinder"...

Just advise them you would have to chop off two cylinders to be equivilent to what backhoes and dozers run. You have the same engine offered in F750's and school busses, etc.

I have a tractor that has a 4 cylinder cummins and trust me after running it you wouldn't guess in a million years it was a 4 clyinder.
People think V-8 means power. They just don't understand, and they are not going to change their mind

Well a V-8 in a gasser, which is what most people are farmiliar with, is generally more powerful than a V-6 or I-6, because it is easier to package a larger displacement engine in a larger block (ie. V-8, V-10, V-12). So when someone thinks of a V-6 they assome between about 2.5L-4.0L of displacement, for a V-8, 4.0L-7.0L+. Its how Detroit has made engines since they started, more displacement meant more cylinders, mostly for weight savings and ease of casting...I still think one of the coolest gas engines is the Dusey` Straight-8.

I recently saw on display a Detroit Diesel 50 something on display at our local Metro office(Bus motor) It was the biggest 4 banger I ever saw. About 4-5' long, at last 4' tall, humungous turbo.
The worls is filled with morons. Just agree with them and move on. It's like listening to a Ford(or Chevy) guy tell you how many ways you are stupid.
It's like, "Talk to the Hand".
We know what are trucks are & what they can do. Long live Cummins and their awesome Motors!

I love to tell Ford People that they would have to move up to an F750 to have the option to UPGRADE their engine to the same 5.9 Cummins I run in my 2500.... That usually doesn't make them smile

In fact I have a Jeep 4.0L I6 and I wouldn't trade it for the 4.7L V8 that was available!!!

That's just a hair under 1 liter per cylinder.

Now go to the kitchen and find a 1 liter bottle of tonic and you'll get an idea why that engine has so much power.

DT.
you got me thinking, my insight has 3cyl-997cc= 1 cly in the truck

I also get a kick out of this. We were hanging out one night when this boy(he's retarded anyways ) started picking on my buddy. He has a 4.0l V-6 ranger, and my buddy had a 5 speed 4cyl S-10 at the time. The boy with the ranger got kind of smart, and said "you wanna race". Buddy said no, im sure you could beat me. I piped up and said I'll race you. He said " of course you will beat me, you have a V-8". I said, my truck is a 6cyl! He then proceeded to argue with me till he finally figured it out, but he sure didnt wanna race. Bad thing is, he worked at a valvoline instant oil change.. Exactly why I change my own oil. He thought the fuel filter was the oil filter!

Anyways, anytime someone talks about a "little" 6cyl, I like to just prove my point by example. Cuts out a lot of the BS, and will make a believe out of them

What ive figured out is that 99.9% of people that u come in contact with have absolutely no knowledge or understanding of engines or how they work. By no means am i trying say that im a "know it all" about the cummins or any other engine. I find it refreshing to talk to someone who actually has a clue of what theyre talkin about. People seem to be really easily swayed by marketing strategies used in the automotive industry. Take for example the 6.4 "twin turbo" powerstroke. Everybody thinks that since theyve got twins stock that they're superior
