Out w/ the CTD in w/ the PSD Excursion...

Well, after a series of discussions w/ my wife, I am selling the truck to get a PSD-Excursion. I love the truck, and I love the CTD even more. However, the Excursion is a compromise for both of us. I want diesel, 4wd, etc. She wants more space (indoors) for people (we have two kiddies) and on occasion one or three of the dogs. (2 GreatDanes 1 BloodHound). I have found a very clean Y2K Excursion w/ the 7.3 of course... So, if any of you have experience w/ these, let me know. By the way, for those that want to comment about the superiority of the Cummins powerplant, I already know that, and I believe that. I am a fan. But, I'm not dissapointed in the fact that the 7.3 PSD is also a workhorse, that also has been proven... Anyhow, these forums w/ in this site are priceless. Tons of info in here. So, thanks to all the smart guys for sharing their knowledge and or their finds.

Are you going to do anything to it as far as performance.

I have several friends that have/have had PSD excursions. The 7.3 is a good engine, not as tough or powerful as the Cummins, but still a great engine. And the engine is probally the worst part of the truck, Ford builds nice truck frames, bodies, and interiors. None of my friends have had any problems with theirs.

WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!

Just stretch your truck, as much room as an excursion with a much better engine.

Nice responses.

Thank you for the continued information and thoughts. There was a question re: performance enhancement. First, I'll make sure the air flows in&out as freely as possible. That maybe the extent of it. I don't want to sacrafice reliability for h.p.

Check out www.thedieselstop.com or www.ford-trucks.com for tons of info on the 7.3. I loved my 7.3s but I wanted a Cummins this time so thats what I got. The Excursions tend to be way heavy, especially the loaded ones. Be careful with exhaust mods as some Ex owners claim that the big open interior makes exhaust drone a big problem.

Well if want some input on the 7.3 I have owned 2 of them, and took one of them to 500 hp. I know those engines way better than the Cummins.

The 7.3L Excursions aren't to bad, they have minor issues like everything else but they seem to be fairly solid!!

Now the V-10's on the other hand are JUNK!!!!

My friend's wife recently totalled out their 2000 PSD Excursion. I drove it new and it is indeed a heavy rig. Driveability was pretty good with decent tracking, poor brakes(four brake jobs in 110,000 miles),minor interior rattles due to the expanse of the thing. Leather seats self-destructed due to child abuse. Power windows went out, probably once again due to life cycle exceeded many times over due to children. Excellent visibility and seating position. No tranny problems or motor problems, nothing. I'd love to have one(7.3 of course) if I had an extra $25,000. Go for it!

All the same stuff you do to the Cummins and more, it just cost more money and time, You get your exhaust, injectors, chip, turbo, bts tranny, then you have to rebuild, pistons, fire rings, rods and so on. Then you put a oil system in and do twins if you want. I know a 7.3 that runs in the 11 on staight diesel everyday of the week. Obviosly there is more to it than that but you get the jist of it.
