Is it okay to drive in 4hi with rear driveshaft removed?
...for troubleshooting a vibration. would need to get up to 70-75mph. a friend who knows nothing about working on cars thought of this at first I thought it was stupid, but now I'm thinking why not? as long as your real easy on the skinny pedal.
Well, a little over a year ago, my buddy blew the rear driveshaft out of his 95 powerjoke on 38's @ a truck pull. He limped it back to my girlfriends at 50mph top speed and had no problems/adverse effects. As far as hitting 75mph, IDK
You can do it. I have done it when I have broke a shaft pulling. Just take it off and use a plastic dixie cup to cover the back housing and wrap it tight with duck tape. It will be fine to do what your wanting to do.

A V-8 juice can will work too, if you can still find 'em. I had to do that after my 10 bolt blew the spider gears out the back cover in my '82 6.2. Fished all the chunks out of it, put a little RTV Black on the holes in the pan, and filled it back up. Drove it like that for a couple months.
thanks for all the great ideas
so I can remove the rear driveshaft without draining the ATF in the T-case but I will need something to press up against the rear seal to ensure it doesn't come out while driving? am I on the right track here?
glad to hear this has been done before and didn't cause any damage.

Funny story, while driving with a neighbour one time who is notorious for driving like a mad man and no maintaining things well.....
he was compalining about how he had a bad u-joint and needed to get it fixed. About 5 m inutes later there was a crash when the driveshaft flung off and did the pole vault in the centre of the road and the drive shaft shot out behind the truck ina crumpled tangled mess of steel.......
Without missing a beat, as we coasted along he reached down, pulled it into
4wd and continued driving........

Never even stopped to check for dammage or pick up what was left of the drive shaft........
Didn't even say a word, we continued to our destination without further incident.

I blew the Gear Vendors out of my old big block powered GMC 4X4 while pulling a 10K trailer out in the middle of nowhere, UT. Removed the rear shaft and pulled the trailer home to San Diego at normal speeds. That NP 205 case and a D44 front end is a tough combination!! Find a way to keep the oil in your trans and it will be fine....
