I recommend using AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate Performance Fuel Additive. Been running it since about 4,000 miles and won't run it without. When I was in Montana, I ran the Diesel Concentrate Plus Cold Flow Improver during the winter months. I just bought another case of the Diesel Concentrate. Treatment is 1 oz to 5 gal = 1 bottle to 80 gal.

I am a big Lucas fan though. I use and sell pretty much all Lucas oils and products in my bike shop and have never had a problem with anything I've used of theirs.
So what part of MT were you in? I was born in Livingston and raised on the ranch up in Clyde Park for the first few years of my life. Dad was born in Luther and most of my family are from the Red Lodge, Bridger, Billings, Luther areas. Jim.

BikerJim/chenry,
That's unfortunate, I'm sorry you had a bad experience with AMSOIL. My dad runs it in his Heritage Softail Classic with no problems, brother runs it in his Buell Firebolt, other brother runs it in his boat and I have quite a few friends that run it in their bikes/vehicles with no problems as well. Amsoil backs their products with a warranty...anyhow, I run it in everything: both vehicles, lawn mower, two-stroke weed wacker & chainsaw, past motorcycle and never had problems. Mobile 1 Synthetic was the reason why I switched to Amsoil in 2002. Caused major sludge build up in the top end of the engine. Thought I had a blown head gasket on a brand new truck, took to dealer, they said it was normal, I wasn't pleased with that response, found Amsoil and never looked back...and the sludge that was "normal" never happened again during the 6 years I owned the truck.
I've been through Livingston. I have some friends that are from Billings. Red Lodge was where I was trying to organize a free ATV trip a few years ago. We lived in Great Falls for just over 6 years. I loved it up there and kind of hope to go back one day, really because of the hunting and backpacking opportunities and the friends we left behind. We still have a house up there that a lot of blood, sweat and tears went into remodeling that keeps us tied to Montana. My wife, the kids, and I, went up into the Little Belt mountains before we left and spread her brothers ashes up there.
As for what additive to run, many folks use different brands. When I was a Firefighter in MT, we used Power Service Diesel Fuel Supplement or Diesel Kleen (can't remember which). I believe Cummins and Chrysler's stance is that a supplement is not needed when using good fuel. However, I recall reading an article that mentioned using a fuel additive is good idea because of the reduced lubricity of the ULSD fuel. I won't run without an additive, but that is probably because I don't want to break the habit and I have never had problems with it. Plus it gives me the warm fuzzy feeling that I am doing something good for my engine on top of the dpf and egr being stolen in the middle of the night

.Everyone has a favorite and while I certainly won't fault you for your choices I wll agree to disagree and again in the very best way possible.
Me personally, I've sold Lucas products in my bike shop for over 5 years now and use it in all three of my bikes and never had an issue one with it with mine or others. The Scamsoil on the other hand, well you already know how I feel about that snake oil. Actually I wouldn't even give it to a snake as it would be cruel and unusual treatment to an animal. LOL Just kidding but seriously, if it works don't fix it is what I always say and we can't always agree on everything so that said I'll say no more about oil.
Maybe a subliminal incantation here and there like Lucas or Mobil 1 or, well you get it. Haha.
I have always as an over the road driver of big rigs been taught to use Shell Rotella T in the diesels and I've never ever had a problem with it either. It's like all the good oils, a little pricey but you get what you pay for and if it means extending the life of my vehicle and giving it the very best I can then I will not scrimp to buy the cheapest oil or the cheapest filter just to say I saved a couple of dollars.
Our shop at work just changed out to Royal oil. Not Royal Purple but just Royal. The shop boss is all high on it. I told him I think he's been smoking it but not even a snicker. He's been a diesel mechanic for a number of years and studies a lot about lubes as well he should since we have literally millions of dollars worth of Macks, Cat and Volvo heavy construction equiptment so with that kind of money invested it's not worth it to scrimp when it could be the difference between a machine out making money or in for an inframe or worse, total melt down.
I have to admit that I've heard of Royal and I believe it's been around for a while but I can't honestly say I've heard much about it either good or bad. I'll watch how things go with it for a while and post up what I am seeing.
You are making me miss MT. My stepdad was born and raised in Sidney and he and his mom and dad owned several thousand sections of land up there. Not a mineral right one either. They didn't know or weren't educated in all that being old school ranchers and the oil boom hadn't really hit that hard up there during his time of ranching. It wasn't until later on in life before he married my mom that the boom started to hit that area. It didn't last long for one reason or another but I guess it's in full swing again. At least the Williston, Minot, Area is. Russle is long gone now and what a shame as he was one heck of a man and one I'll always admire. I am positive that marrying my mother is what put him into an early grave. Darn shame too.
Well I just got my new K&N air filter and installed it today as well as I removed that baffle that's behind it in the intake tube. Man that thing is a monster piece of plastic with a bunch of foam wrapped around it. It actuall came out very easily. I just removed the tube and pulled it straight up and out and it slid right out with no problems. I didn't get to take it for a run tonight as it was getting late and I was hungry. I'll run it to work tomorrow without and see what kind, if any difference I notice and let everyone know if it was a good thing to remove or not.
Thanks again for the tip on that and I'll be happy to discuss oil anytime but maybe privately so as not to bore or stir the pot. LOL
Hope everyone is having a great evening. Night, Jim.

Does the truck run better? Better mileage?
I don't get it....
Why do you reccomend it? Own stock in Amsoil?

There are too many variables in diesel fuel. Because ULSD lacks the lubricating properties of low-sulfur diesel, additives are often added before transport or at the pump to make up for it, and in my opinion, to keep older diesels that lived off the older diesel fuel, happy (the only time I have seen or at least noticed a fuel station that carries LSD, after a couple years ULSD became mandatory, was when I went through a small town in Utah). Because of the many variables with the lubricating additives that may or may not be there at the pump, is the reason why I use it. Since I have been using it since about 4K miles, it is hard to say if I got better MPG, on top of all the other "enhancements" I have done. Additionally, it also helps keep the injectors clean, while lubricating the injectors and fuel pump better than what ULSD will do alone. Now, for someone that hasn't used any diesel fuel additives, then start using it, may very well may see an increase in MPG as well as other performance increases.
I don't own stock in Amsoil since they are a private company, but I guess you can say since I purchase often, I often have stock in my garage that I do own
. Plus, as a privately owned American company, the "First In Synthetics", the first to guarantee a 25K mile change interval, among others, I don't know why anyone wouldn't want to use them.

Mega, no offense but I wouldn't give an Amsoil product to a homeless person if it improved their odds of winning the lottery. Had a really bad experience with Scamsoil in one of my bikes and no thanks. Almost ruined a $2500 build on that engine. Always ran Mobil 1 in it and couldn't get it before a trip to MT to take my dads ashes up to the old homestead in Luther, MT. Long story short as soon as I got home and located some M1 I dumped the Scamsoil and end of problem. I know a lot of people like it but never again for me.

I've also had good luck with Lucas for what it's worth. Royal P quieted the rumbling in my rear end. Fuel additives don't seem to do much, sometimes Howes/Powerservice/Lucas seems to smoothen things out. Quality of the fuel going in seems to have the biggest effect on me. And I'll pay for a good product, but Amsoil is too much for motor oil/things that get changed regularly.
I've had good luck with Oreilly brand oil in my beaters.
I know a great truck and transmission builder that uses the ATF+4 from Sams Club, super tech or whatever. That is what is in my truck.
Only additive I've noticed that did anything for me was 2 stroke oil. It made the motor much quieter.
Around the farm and work I think I'm going to stick with the off brand oils from now on unless it is my primo piece of equipment.

Oil Analysis
Well, today I received the results of my oil sample taken last week that I wanted to share. I have got to say, I was pretty impressed - but not surprised. I was more worried about running HOT on #3 (until recently when I bumped it down) w/out ARP head studs and was curious about any potential damage - still runs as strong as ever
When I did the deletes, I put in AMSOIL DEO 5W-40 with the intent of running it for a year and taking oil samples at the first 3K miles, then extended out further based on results. Time got by very quickly this past year and I never did take an oil sample until last week when I switched over to the AMSOIL AME 15W-40 Heady Duty Diesel & Marine Motor Oil.
I put 17,954 miles on the oil in just under 1 year. The only item flagged was for slightly elevated levels of Potassium, but nothing of too much concern. I could have continued using it, but I would have started taking samples more frequently.
Total Cost in Oil Changes for 2011 prior to switching to AMSOIL DEO: $236.92
Total Cost in Oil Change for the last year Oct 2011-2012: $124.64 (DEO + filter).
Most Recent Oil Change to AME: $151.23 (wow the cost of oil went up quite a bit since the AME is still cheaper than the DEO).
So this is the reason why I run AMSOIL:

My grandfather use to always put in one or two quarts of ATF in with the diesel in his old Ford until he go rid of it and the 5th wheel for a motor home a couple years ago. I remember plenty of talks with him and it seemed when we started talking about trucks, diesel and ATF always seemed to enter the discussion, lol.
