Oil Spill Cleanup
Oil Spill Cleanup
So back when I first got my truck and did the first oil change on it I was vastly underprepared for how quickly such a large amount of oil would drain out of the truck. Even though I had a big enough pan to catch it, and cardboard laid down on the driveway I still managed to spill enough off of the cardboard that there was a nice big black stain created on my driveway, despite my best attempts to soak it up at the time. If this were my own driveway I would just leave the stain, but since I'm renting the house, the landlord wants it cleaned up. I tried soaking it in Coca Cola, as well as WD-40 and carb cleaner and scrubbing the hell out of it. While that definitely lightened it up a bit, the stain is still very much there. Does anyone have any other suggestions on how to clean this stain? Thanks!!
My personal experience only One of the best things I have found is kitty litter just the plain old cheap stuff. Put over the stain then grind it down into a fine powder with your shoe. This breaks it down into smaller dust particles and forces it a bit deeper into the pores of the concrete. Let it sit for days, cover with cardboard or the like to keep it from blowing away. I have had decent success with this method. It wont make it perfect but it may make it acceptable.
Over 40 years ago I dropped a pan full of transmission fluid on the driveway. Obviously it was not just a few oil spots it was quite a large oil spot. I used some acid on it that stuff bubbled up pretty good and did a pretty decent job but you could still tell there had been a spill of some sort there not mention where the acid had been the concrete was whiter than the rest of it. However as time went by it all went away and looked normal like in a few years.
Another time I made a mess in an apartment parking lot. It was blacktop/asphalt. Couldnt get the stain up good enough for the landlord so I ended up just coating that one parking space with blacktop sealer/tar. After that it was the best looking parking space in the lot. Since I couldn't get the stains up I figured why not cover it up. He was satisfied but did make the comment "now the rest of them look like crap".
