Nissan's to join the diesel truck market.....
This is from today's edition of Autotech Daily:
"NISSAN TO JOIN THE U.S. DIESEL TRUCK MARKET
Going head-to-head against its Detroit counterparts, Nissan Motor Co. will introduce a diesel-powered, heavy-duty commercial truck in the U.S. by the end of the decade, reports The Nihon Keizai Shimbun. It says the vehicle, intended for the construction market, will be built at Nissan’s Canton, Miss., plant at an annual rate in the tens of thousands of units.
The diesel powerplant is expected to displace between 6 and 7 liters. Nissan likely will buy an existing engine and adapt it to its truck rather than develop an all-new powerplant internally, according to the newspaper. One possible vendor: Cummins Inc. in Columbus, Ind. This summer Cummins indicated it was developing a new family of diesels for an unnamed automaker for use in pickup trucks and SUVs.
Nissan and rival Toyota Motor Corp. have been oving into larger and larger truck segments in recent years. But neither has taken the plunge into the super-duty pickup segment, and they don’t offer a diesel engine in any truck. Nissan had been expected to adapt its current half-ton Titan pickup into three-quarter and one-ton configurations. But those plans were shelved when it was determined the frame couldn’t support heavier payloads. It now will have to wait until the sturdier, next-generation Titan platform arrives in 2009 or 2010."

Maybe there finally WILL be a CUMMINGS diesel.......

I bet it came from a Ford salesman. It is a rumor that won't die. I have been hearing "Cummins is going to Ford when their contract with Dodge is up next year" since I can remember. (I'm only 24)

That is true, but not available in this country and most likely never will be.
I would be interested to see what they do with putting a Cummins in something the size of a Dakota - that'd be a nice little grocery getter, just so long as they change the front fender design sometime SOON.
I heard this same thing from the Mercedes dealer the other day. I stopped by to pick a part and was driving the Ram. Then they said Dodge would be using a Mercedes Diesel instead when the contract ran out.
I believe it. The Sprinter already does. Mercedes makes great diesels.
