newbie questions

i'm newer to diesels but i know i want cummins or a new duramax, i'm wanting something easier to take care of and thus something that will last a long time, i don't wanna buy another truck for a while, i'm tired of the 318 and its sucky gas mileage also, i'm wanting to bomb it a lil to take care of all the riceburners around
so heres the question
what years to look at? what not too look for and what to look for, cause the truck would probably be used
also what some ideas on what all to put on it,, gettin an itchin for something different
thanks

The options are endless, the 94-98 12 valve engines are easy to bomb, and "relatively" inexpensive. The 1998.5-2002 can be bombed more easily with add on computers, and are probably more driveable once modded. I know nothing about the third gens, someone else can help there. How much do you want to spend?
