It's my pot and I'll stir it if I want to. If you're not careful, I'll stir your's as well!
Almost all the major car manufactures sell a diesel version of their product to the overseas market. To bad that some of them don't at least TRY and sell the diesel engine in North America. Perhaps if some manufactures started to sell diesel engined cars here at a breakeven price or even a reasonable profit, that in a few years the demand for diesel powered cars will take off. Specially as the price of gasoline skyrockets.
Hey, I know, its a conspiracy. Diesel engines are too reliable and the car dealers will not make as much profit if a bunch of folks started to drive diesels in lieu of gas. Also the the big greedy gas companies will not sell as much if too many people started to drive economical vehicles.

Actually, Stan, it's the stupid EPA. They are more concerned with NOx and particulates than HC, CO, and CO2.
There's no real incentive for manufacturers to meet U.S. standards because there's very little demand for diesel cars here. GM destroyed the domestic market for diesels with their horrible Oldsmo-diesels. Nearly everyone I know thought I was nuts to buy a diesel pickup. If they weren't old enough to remember the GM diesels, their dad told them how lousy diesels are.

I used to own a Delta 88 with the diesel engine and modified suspension. Great car AND engine! It had lots of power and was almost as economical as a Datsun 510 I used to own. It eventually broke the crank at around 310,000 kms. Can't remember the exact mileage as it was a long time ago. Removed the diesel and dropped in a 350 4 barrel. Accelaration improved but the fuel consumption dropped by about half. Got rid of that car quickly after that.
