Angry New math????

I bought 50 gallons of red diesel today from my local bulk supplier for my Bobcat. It was $1.68 a gallon. 5 miles down the road, at the SAME suppliers quick mart fuel station, road diesel was $2.19 a gallon. The road tax in California is .36 a gallon. So......according to my math, $1.68 + .36 adds up to $2.04.....NOT $2.19!!!!...is this an algebra problem????.....Makes a fella want to run red ALL the time...that is until you read the attached link

Just in 97-98 I bought thousands of gallons of red for the tractor at .60 cents a gallon. Fuel prices are way outta control.

Exactly!!!!...the typical station claims to make 7 cents a gallon on gas. This station is not only making the mark-up on the red diesel at who knows what amount?, they are then piling on another .15 a gallon profit on the road diesel. We all know that diesel is cheaper to produce and there is no justifiable reason that it should be priced at or very near gas. This is plain old dealer GREED!

If you buy road diesel in bulk from the same supplier as the red, you will find that is alot cheaper than the station . If you have an area that you can store 50 gal of red, see if you can get a 275 gal oil tank and a hand pump and have them fill it with road fuel. If you burn 50 gal a month, you could save enough to pay for the tank in a yeay to a year and a half. Plus you have the benifit of adding your additives in bulk in the storage tank and removing any water/contaminates through the drain on the bottom regularly.

Not so fast guys concerning greed of operators. A friend of mine owned/operated a full service service-station for many years at a major US highway near a busy intersection. His prices were set by someone in an office, based on geographic profile of the highway (traffic numbers provided by DOT). A company's greed perhaps, not on the part of the owner/operator. When the highway was moved and widened his biz went down, but the prices remained the same. He changed brands he was carrying to reduce the price and continued in biz till he retired. Nat

That's true--most station operators simply set the prices to what they're told to set them to. That's not to say that Ma-'n-Pa Kettle don't raise they're prices to match the price set by the local branch of Ultra-Mega-Gas-'N-Gulp, though, because they usually do.

Around here, it's QuickTrip. Although they do not drill, refine, or transport one drop of fuel, they set the prices. Always goes up in 10-cent increments; comes down one or two cents at a time.

Ok, I'll try not to climb too far up on the ol' soapbox... but here goes; yes, people can charge whatever they want for their product. For example, dairy farmers could raise the price of milk 150%. And you can decide whether to put milk or water on your cereal. And doctors can get together and decide to charge a million dollars for visits. Then you get to decide whether to go to the doctor for that kidney stone or just throw yourself off the nearest bridge! I don't begrudge anyone from making a FAIR profit. But when it is evident that a company, corporation or individual is (see Enron, Opec, Martha Stewart etc..) operating on a "screw the buyer" platform, then I have a problem with it. Partcularly when they have a corner on the product! There is no reason why you can't make money in this world and STILL be a decent and fair person!

actually ten8fiftyone I agree with you , but that does not seem to be the way the world works nowdays and there's not really anything we can do about it other than not buy their stuff ...................

oh yeah I wanted to point out that when it comes to independant gas stations they all buy their fuel at the same price .............. so buy from the one who sells it cheaper, just drive on by the expensive place, if everybody did that he'd lower his prices

One thing to consider about having fuel delivered, is around here, delivery charge of fuel is about $.10/gal. So check things out before doing it.
