New Ford f450 opinions

I'm in Florida and our neighbor just bought the new 07/8 Ford F450 with the new 6.4 engine. Definatly don't know about issues with new engine but it seems impressive. It is a long box duelly. Comes with 19.5 tires with 10 lug wheels and Continental rib style tires. It appears to have no glow plugs or warn up cycle to start, here it dosen't matter but colder will tell. Extremely quiet. I thought it was a gasser till I saw the labels and she opened the hood. Very busy under the hood, wouldn't want to have to work under there. Even the dipsticks are hard to find. Interior is quite nice even though it is the cheaper interior, not leather. Love the tailgate cushioning while opening and built in ladder, very convenient. The bumpers even have traction surfaces on them if you use them as steps. Over all and if the engine proves itself this may be the truck to beat. Time will tell but think Dodge & GM better look out the window to see what is chasing them. And yes I own a Dodge but this truck caught my attention. Time will tell. I wish Ford luck. If they have been listening to their dissatisified buyers they might regain their place especially if Dodge & GM don't start listening soon.

Just my opinions for now, time will tell.....

Unfortunately the price is ridiculous for an F450. Ford, Chevy, even Dodge need to get the prices under control. Who can afford a 60K truck? The 6.4 could drive itself and I still couldn't afford the high price.

I'm sure it's a nice truck and hopefully your neighbor will have many years of trouble-free driving. As for me, I'll stick with my paid for '05.

I test drove a F-450, it sure was a nice truck to drive. I did like the tires and 19.5 wheels. Price was a little crazey it was around $56,000
What I didn't like is with 4.88 gears they derate the engine.
Time will tell very soon how good or how bad the 6.4 is One more thing they still have glow plugs

Except for the price and unknown motor, much of the truck sounds appealing. 26000 combined weight rating, 19.5s, stock pyro, boost, and trans temp, stock fluid pressure actuated brake controller...

My opinion is that the new f450 with the factory pickup bed is an overpriced "compensation vehicle" for someone that has to one up everybody else with a useless toy he has no need for. The only way to work that truck would be to tow because with an 8 foot pickup bed you could never put enough in it to even use the payload capacity, that is, unless you are hauling lead. That means that anybody buying it should be using it for towing to make it somewhat worth the money but you'll need a CDL to max it out. For someone that tows to that extent chances are good you're in business to tow which means that spending 60K on a pickup to tow 24500# when you could buy a used class 8 tractor for half that price and tow up to 80000# seems not only like a bad business decision but just stupid. You'd need the CDL for both anyway and the OTR trucks are built to a standard that makes them a much smarter investment.

I agree in that I think the truck will be used for heavy RV towing.

Some of the huge toyhaulers can get up to 18,000 pounds. By the time you take into account four 200 pound plus people in the truck, the hitch, maybe a fuel tank... and you are way over the gross vehicle weight rating of the pickups. Most people just ignore the ratings, but it would be nice to have the option to stay within ratings.

I also agree they are priced way too high, especially when you compare what you get for your dollar in a commercial truck, but if you also need the vehicle to be 4x4 options are limited.

I don't know how much room a yd of gravel takes up in the bed of a pickup. Will it fill the bed? Because with 2 tons of gravel in there you'd still be 2120# under the payload for a 4x2 and 1720# under on the 4x4. Plus, I don't know about you, but I wouldn't be shoveling it out. Not to mention, even if you could put all that gravel in there how would you keep it in with the taligate down? If you left the tailgate up you'd never get it down with the gravel up against it. As for brick cubes, you could only load directly from the back with pallet forks so you're only going to get a maximum of two in side by side and my truck with weak springs will hold one so I don't think that 2 would be any trouble for the 450.

This truck is going to be popular. It fills a void in the current truck market. Yes, I realize the F450 was always available but now its being forced into the spotlight.

Its really the only thing out right now with that capacity in that price range. You could buy a GMC 4500 for $20k more... an F650 for $30k more... Freightliner for $60k more... Thats a lot of dough that you may or may not have after spending $150,000 on a horse trailer/camper/etc.

I see it every day. The majority of people towing with a 3500/350 truck are way over the limit.

As the 450-class vehicles become more common among RVers you can bet that the trailers are just gonna' keep getting bigger and bigger.

All my Tiger scouts say, "Camp in a tent, we love it. PILLOW FIGHT!!"

For $50K+, they may have a point.

Sorry, forgot to mention, bought by a middle agged handicapped lady and her cat. She is towing a very heavy carriage 5th wheel. She travels year round and her prior 02 Dodge 4x4 3500 Cummins diesel dully wasn't rated heavy enough for towing her fiver. She was having troubles in the mountains of Tenn/Ky etc. She will know if a few weeks how the new Ford works as her next 7 week stop is outside of Nashville Tenn in 3 weeks. I asked her to e-mail me her opinion of how it compared to her Dodge as she makes this same Fair circuit every year for the last 5 years.

PS here's a picture of the new Ford engine compartment, think it is the 3rd picture. Look on the hood bib. And yes it looks up close as crowded as the picture shows.

Oh, I have no doubt. Its a never ending cycle. No one will be content until everyone is driving a Freightliner. I don't mind it... I sell them!

Wouldn't surprise me in a few years if the 3/4 ton truck became extinct and we're left with the 1 ton as a sole replacement and a 450 moving into the position that the 1 ton once held.
