Guys, Working on a school project for my IC engines class. We are supposed to pick a motor and then pick a sub system and tell why the they have evolved the way they have, I was looking at doing the fuel system(IP) on cummins motors, 4 different pumps really; Ve, P7100, vp44, CP3/common rail, my question is why did they change these systems, cost?, emission?, power? anyone that has some insight that would be great, back sub system is turbo, std vs VGT on new cummins.

In my opinion emissions are the only reason for engine changes.
The good old simple, reliable 12 valve with the P pump is still manufactured by Cummins for export.

the change from P7100 to VP44 was specifically to meet new emissions requirements that started in calender year 1998.

 

Well sort of...
The use of the VP was an unplanned, last minute, stop gap way to meet emissions but was only undertaken because the new CR engine wasn't ready.
Cummins has stated publicly that they were very disappointed with the VP pump.

 

Why did they switch from ve to p7100 pumps?
