Here's a few pics of the ATS Aurora 5000 series turbo for the Duramax.

God no...

That's not good... If they can get bigger chargers for the Duramax's, they can definitely give the Cummins a run for it's money power-wise. If I recall, can't a box on a Duramax with the stock tubo and injectors get something like 500 horsepower? Well, that's for a few minutes anyhow.

This is the first time I've heard of anything for a Duramax other than just a computer.

They make good power boxed, with everything else stock, but I dont think Kent Crowder will have anything to worry about anytime soon from a D-Max. I dont think the bottom end would hold up to even 800hp for very long. The D-Max is more of a racer than a puller in my opinion too. If it gives a cummins a run for the money it will be on the drag strip if you ask me, but they still have a ways to go.

mtomac: Any idea what kinda power your pushing(or is it secret )? I have seen your truck run many times(pull and race), and it is very impressive. The D-Max has proven to be a good engine so far, but what kind of HP do you think is possible without bottom end/rod or any other kind of major motor work? Also, arent they coming out with twins for the D-Max as we speak? Do you plan to go to a bigger charger/twins, and how do they spool compared to the stocker?

Between the 6 spd tranny they are supposed to get and that turbo, the Dmax is gonna be a force to be reckoned with. Oh well. I'd rather get beat by a chevy than a ford.

Nah, don't be scared. The price for the ATS and needed supporting equiptment is around $4500. Even at that level their head gaskets get scared and start peeing orange stuff. Even better are the twins DTT/Nathan are developing. Those will seriously challenge the head gaskets and provide streetable power. A ride in an ATS equiped truck is like taking a ride in a Dodge with a hx55 or larger. Laaaag, smoke then BOOM! Off ya go!

I'll agree they're not cheap but the bolt on kit from ATS including: studs, turbo, pedistal, downpipe, oil feed line, oil return line, coolant blockoff plug, AFE stage 2, turbo to intercooler adapter, turbo to afe pipe adapter, bolts, clamps & transmision dipstick tube. No one has found the limit of a stock Duramax head gasket with studs. Heck my stock HG's without studs have endured over 100K miles of towing heavy, sledpulling abuse and dragracing abuse spraying nitrous.

Brandon, have you driven a truck with an ATS turbo on it? I was expecting lag and was worried about not being able to tow heavy with this setup, but the ATS turbo spools very fast and doesn't have any more lag than the stock turbo.

No, modified pullers won't have to worry about but the Duramax this year but the guys in the street class and maybe the prostreet/superstreet class will. I doubt the stock Duramax rods will survive above 1000hp but at that level the motor is in race truck not a daily driver. Banks and Quicktime Automotive have Duramax engines running actual twins. DTT also has a compound setup in the testing stages right now. I was running 12.5@106 mph on #2 only with the stock turbo and injectors so when the dragstrip opens up in April I'll see how much power the ATS turbo with some bigger injector nozzles will make. I'm sticking with a single because 2 of the 3 organizations I pull with don't have a class for street trucks with twins/compounds.

that exhaust housing looks very small so i think it would build boost pretty quick.

ATS also has a kick a$$ billet compressor wheel with a blade design that helps it spool up quicker.

I get chapped a bit when I hear that twins are not allowed in the street class. I get chapped worse when I hear they stick the 24 valves in with the HIGH DOLLAR specifically built pulling trucks. Total nonsense.

I hate it when a Texan gets "chapped"...it always leads to something bad.

i don't know if the 6 speed slushbox and this turbo setup will ever meet though... the new LLY dmax engines have a VGT charger on them very similar to the one of the VT365/6.0PSD... and the 6 speed will be with an LLY engine...

but even with the current 5 range allison and this new charger will make for something stupid quick on the street...

Dodge is also getting the VGT though. You know how hard our trucks start pulling when they hit 10lbs of boost now? Just wait till the thrw a VGT on it. Talk about tire smokin! They ought to light the tires on fire at about 1k rpm's, and with a box they should be wicked!
