Modern Diesel Engine Break-in?
Modern Diesel Engine Break-in?
We recently brought home a 2022 Mercedes Sprinter Diesel.
I'm becoming familiar with many of the issues surrounding the OM 642 engine and one of the main reasons is not using break in oil and properly breaking in of the motor.
This is FAR different from the break in of my Cummins (which was put a heavy load on it a drive the hell out of it up and down the passes a few times).
What I need to know is what break in oil I should use for the first 1000 miles or so..any ideas???
I’m m leaning towards Gibbs Racing Diesel Engine Break In Oil.
I’m asking because there is considerable debate as to whether modern Diesel engines are “broken in” by the manufacturer prior to delivery and I want to get it right. The owners manual simply states to drive at varying speeds for the first 1000 miles. But I know there’s a 99.9% chance that the RV delivery driver would have just jumped in, hit go, jumped on the freeway and set the cruise on the speed limit (or thereabouts) for the 2000+ mi trip from the factory in Indiana to th3 dealership n Kent, Washington. In my book that hardly qualifies as breaking in the engine.

My dad bought an 80 300SD Turbodiesel brand new. We never knew or heard of a break in period. It went a million miles before finally getting scrapped. Needed 2 alternators and one transmission. Regular service visits it's entire life...
Mercedes is at the front of the reliability line with diesel engine technology. I would trust that it is ready to use.
Just my .02
