So heres the question: I work in the marine industry (seasonally) now with all the talk about USLD for land vehicles, I am wondering if the sulfer is being lowered in marine diesel as well? The marine diesel is dyed red, so it can't be the same stuff at the land based stations. Anyone know for sure, or where I can find out for sure? Thanks in advace

 

Its probably just off road diesel for marine industry. I heard that the off road will not go to usld untill 2007.

Marine diesel shouldn't be taxed for road use, hence it's red dye.

Mike - I thought farm diesel wasn't mandated to be ULSD until 2010?

 

I heard from a semi reliable friend that it started next year so that they could switch all the filters in all the pumps at once..Maybe im wrong...

 

Actually, I think your friend is mistaken.

We're keeping an eye on the off-road ULSD introduction, as it affects our old machinery.

I use off road on the farm and in the boat. First there's no tax on it, state or federal. It's red or black dye depending upon use. If you're using it for marine application, it should be one of those two colors, if not, it's road diesel, which may harm your engines. We don't switch over until 2010.

When onroad changed to ULSD offroad changed to the low sulfur diesel we've been using onroad since 1994.
In 2010 all diesel fuel will be ULSD.

 

I've run red in darn near everything(farm trucks, tractors, skidsteer, boat, furnance etc.) for 20+ tears and i have never run into black. I wonder if that is a regional sort of thing.Or is black the mandated color for marine fuel?

In Canada, it can also be purple or black.

 

we are running lsd here offshore. dyed red of course. no ulsd yet. it depends where your at but in some places oveseas the fuel is clear and sometimes yellow.
