Looking at a PTO dyno

A friend of mine looked at a PTO dyno tonight and I'm going to look at it tomorrow night with him.

He says its an AW, will dyno up to 400hp, says it look like new.
The guy who has bought it to setup tractors for tractor pulling, he only used it a couple of times. Now he buys them already setup.
Wants $2600 for it. Not sure if its a high/low/medium price. Looking for some input on the subject.

400hp ain't much these days. I'm at 371 and my roommate is at 401 and we've both got fairly small injectors. But then again, if all your looking to dyno is tractors then go for it.

Don't know how you would adapt one to use on other than a tractor pto if that's your intention.
The pto dynos I'm familiar with are nothing more than a water pump, as you close a valve on the outlet side of the pump it creates more hp draw. A gauge calibrated in hp rather than psi measures the output pressure of the pump.

Thats my intention, tractors only. We have over 40 tractors at home.
Was hoping someone here had some good comments about one.

JD.. it depends on the condition.. a new AW will run 15-20K... depending on options... Most are now upgrading to the 600's because of the larger tractors.. We'll be running a new 600 next week on some PreBuilt 8530 series tractors... Normally the 400's will get hot when you run them long in the 300hr range... (Water supply is normally the problem) You won't have a problem running the Antiques... the little one we have is only a 100hp but.. it does what we need for tuning...
I'd have to say if its in fair-good shape its well worth the money.. if you need to get it rebuilt.. look to spend up to 5K, if you have AW do the work...
Do you know if its a water jet type.. or the regular Brake and drum style.. (I think all of the 600's I have seen are drum type.) It should be a 3 drum setup.. (Friend bought a 600 and got a steal on it for 1500.. but it needs a fair amount of work..)
Good Luck...
Bryan

(I'm keeping the G off the dyno for a while after the last disaster.)

Well, looks like I own a dyno.
Its an AW, its a 375hp machine. I can still hook up the big MM's Looking at the dates on the books and the machine service records I'd say it was built in '78. Came from a John Deere dealer out in PA, the guy that has it now only used it 2 or 3 times. Lack of time and PTO's on his tractors.
From looking at the parts break down it is a drum typ setup.

Clean the normal accumilation of grime off of it and most people would have a hard time telling it from a newer machine.

You shouldn't have any problems getting parts... Sometimes the guages are the only thing you can not get anymore.. (but you should have a problem) The only thing you might want to do is change the oil in the drums... and of course calibrate it..
I'll take a few picks of the new 600 getting a work out next week...

That's the model we have...call A&W and see what it would cost to have the dyno checked out. Last time we did ours, they checked it out, and tested the watersupply for cooling capacity, and verified the accuracy...but I can't remember what it costs!!

We have hod ours up to 425PTO HP on a couple occasions, but it take A LOT of water to cool them at that level. Anyting under 150hp, he caould run almost all day!!
