A lesson in fuel station etiquette for gasser drivers/RANT

Ok, here we go.

There is one place that I stop about 90% of the time to fuel up my truck.

Why - Its a really nice station, nice people, clean store.
- Diesel pumps get used a lot, a lot of construction crews fill up their Ford 6.no-gos there.
- They have this machine inside that lets you add flavors to your drink... so you can have like cherry coke and add vanilla too it. How cool is that???

Anyway...

There are four pumps at this BP. It is in a small area, it was once a much older place that was just bought out by the Family Fare and completely redone. However the parking lot is still small. There is not much space.

I pull in there one day. A man in a fancy car is sitting at one of the two pumps that have diesel. NONE of the other pumps are being used. One of the diesel pumps was closed off the other day, and also, from the direction that I entered, I would have to turn my truck around in order to use it, which is hard in that little parking lot. Not only is he not fueling up his car, he is sitting there, with one of those fancy things that lets you talk on your cell phone through your cars' stereo, and to top it all off he has it up loud enough and his windows down that the majority of the people entering/exiting the gas station can clearly make out his conversation.

I pull up. I see him talking on his car-cell phone thing. As soon as I get up, I see him slowly get out of his car. He looks back at me, and very slowly goes about his EXTREMELY slow business of fueling up.

Me, I have a card for BP, so I don't have to take cash inside in order to get them to turn the pump on.

This guy:

Gets out of his car, looks back at me, glances at the fuel pump. Gets out his wallet. Sorts through it until he finds cash. Then he proceeds to go into the gas station, pay for his fuel, and come back out with a soda. It is one of those stations where you have to pay before you pump. So anyway, he starts pumping fuel. I still have my truck on idling behind him. He gets in his car, continuing his conversation, and turns up his radio even louder, so that I am now able to clearly distinguish his conversation in my truck with the straight pipe, windows down, and the Cummins idling away behind him.

So his fuel finishes pumping. He goes BACK into the store and buys something else. Comes back out, starts up his car, idles for at least 15 seconds, then pulls away. No friendly "sorry!" wave or anything.

What a *********************************** ******** ******************** ****** ***** is all that was going through my mind.

I mean come on... I must have sat there for at least 6 minutes. I would have probably pulled around to the other pump which would have involved me having to get BACK on the road and turn around (the gas station is on a corner), but the guy was being such a *insert bad word here* that I figured I would let the Cummins do the talking instead of him... It was pretty funny listening to him almost yell so that the person on the other end of his radio-car-phone thing could hear.

But I mean come on...

First of all, he was sitting there talking and not fueling when I got there. He could have literally rolled about 7 feet forward to the GAS pump so that I could pump diesel from the gas/diesel pump.

People at the fuel pumps: please don't be so inconsiderate. I know you may be having an important conversation, but I want to fuel up my truck, run in and grab some tic-tacs, say hi to the nice old cashier man and be on my way was much as the next guy who wants to go in, grab a drink, rudely throw cash at the cashier and run out of the Family Fare, but please, don't have a cell phone conversation, run back into the store twice, and leave without at least a friendly "thanks for putting up with me" wave.

Know how you feel man, its the same way around here. Everytime I go to fill up, both diesel pumps are blocked by either cars or gas trucks while the other pumps are empty. Its very frustrating. I like pulling up as close as i can behind them so they cant hear anything over the idle of the 24v... especially if theyre on the phone

I know what you're talking about. That has happened to me a few times, but only at truck stops. When I fuel up on base (Air Force base out here), people seem to take care of business and then move on.

Thats why I fuel up at places that have diesel pumps away from the gassers. Plus these pumps are for over the road trucks and it takes less than a minute to fuel up 34 gallons.

my station i don't have to deal with any of that.it's a cardtrol with 2 different islands.the one out by the road is the gasser and small nozzle diesel.the other on the side is diesel only with 3 sets of large nozzles and 1 small with soy.

So this is what happened a few minutes ago:

I pull into the station. As usual, a car is at the ONE pump that I use to fill my truck up while all the others are not in use.

An older woman walks out of the store, looking at my truck like "why doesn't that boy shut his loud truck off and just use another pump???". Well, its OK, I can understand.

So, she leaves, I pull up to my pump.

MY PUMP.

Guy in a Ford gasser van with a landscape trailer pulls up behind me. I have already shut off my truck and got out to the pump.

He looks at me and says, hey, could you pull up a pump so I could use this one?

I tried to tell him that this is the only pump with diesel that I can get to. He said something back like "oh so you've already paid", so I guess he didn't hear me. Anyway, I put my card in, filled up with fuel, then waved "sorry" to the guy, started my truck, parked, shut it off, and got my tic tacs and some Reeses Pieces and said hi to the manager at the cash register.

I look out and the guy with the van has pulled up to the SECOND pump, NOT the one he asked me to move from, so now his van and trailer are blocking the ENTIRE length of pumps on one side.

I. JUST. DON'T. GET. PEOPLE.

*STARTS BASHING HEAD*

yep it happens all the time here, the cheapest place for diesel is also cheapest for gas and every time there are gas pumps open but the diesel/gas pump is always being used by a gasser

when i first got my diesel, i stopped by fj on the way home to fill the truck up. all the pumps were taken. only 4 diesel pumps because the other 4 were out of service. i see a truck with a horse trailer taking up 2 pumps and didn't see the guy so i figured he was inside paying. so i quickly got in line behind him. waited... waited... waited... i waited about 5 minutes and still noone got into the truck. so i got peeved and moved to the line for the other 2 pumps with diesel. i waited my turn, 3 vehicles in front of my counting the 2 at the pumps. my turn came, put in cc and then filled up.

the guy in the diesel truck hogging 2 pumps still hadn't came back out to his truck. i figure he decided to eat or something and didn't have the courtasy to park in the parking lot by the pumps.

so it isn't just gassers, by mostly the gassers are the ones in the way...

i have to agree i hate it everytime i go to fill up my truck. Where i go there's like 5 pumps and only one of them has diesel and it's a combo pump. Since it's diesel, they put it on the end closest the entrance/exit easiest to get into and out of with larger length vehicles including trailers, but every single time everyone with their dang gas cars that have no problem getting to the other pumps but they always pull up the combo pump, and it's always when i have a trailer on the back so i can't get around to the other side of that pump without doing like a 20 point turn with the trailer because the didn't design the lot very well. Only reason i go there is because it's our grocery store and so we get a good discount when you buy $100 worth of groceries then you get a discount for 10 cents off a gallon and also they're usually about 5-10 cents cheaper a gallon then anywhere else at normal price also.

I have been lucky as both places I get fuel have the diesel pump on the side and many times I have seen the gas pumps full with a line out in the road and rairly do I have to wait to fuel up.

If a guy was doing what you originally posted to me I would've got out of my truck and would've asked him what he is doing and why he couldn't just move. Some times people just need a little chat to learn

I was at a Flying J in Calgary where they have dedicated diesel lanes for RV's and trailers. I have a car carrier trailer on so I try to drive around the lot to get into line. Some #### pulls his 1980 diesel Chevette into the line and gets out, goes into the store for about 10 minutes doing whatever, then comes out and uses pay at the pump to put 30 Litres of fuel in. In the mean time I had pulled up to about 24" from his bumper and had the idle set to 1200... Couldn't you use the automotive pumps dude??

I feel your pain..
