John Deere 4455 hard to start!

we have a john deere, year 92 wish is almost impossible to start w/o ether!

we have brought the injection pump (bosh-similar to the 12valves cummins)
to the an injection shop, have had the injectors adjusted,
and the timing has been moved by several shops!

the injectors have been replaced as well! (just not sure if there must be the wrong ones in?!
but everything didnt help much!
and yes: the engine smokes (blue-white) while starting... so that means, it gets fuel, just maybe not in the right spray pattern, or not at the right time?

any help is apreciated!

Silvano

Our 4040 is the same way, It low compression on ours. Pistons and rings would solve that problem. Use the tractor every day, so I haven't gotten the prob. fixed yet.

How many hours on this machine? They get to a point where there just isn't enough compression to light fuel up anymore. I have a 3020 diesel here that doesn't have enough commpression to light ether up let alone diesel fuel. Our 410 backhoe is the same way, needs ether when its cold and needs a bottle of cold water to pour on the IP when after its hot in the summer to get it to start.

You should check the draw of the starter, and check your batteries. your 4455 full fuels that why you get the smoke ,should be black. I had a 4455 and it did the same thing as your describing, I had about 8000 hrs and was hard to start without either on my tractor it was low compression, (still used hardly any oil) I ran the tractor to about 10500 when I traded it. I decided either was cheaper then a overhaul. I would do a oil anailas to be on the safe side!

thanks to your replies!

yup! we have replaced the pistons, and rings i suppose (at a shop),
so that should have fixed the compression or?

we replaced the injection pump, the injectors, and the turbo!.

whats an oil analisis??

Your valves could need a freshening up too, the cylinder could be scored , etc ,al causing low compression. Batteries and started in good shape? slow cranking doesn't help weak compression.

What motor is in that particular machine? It evades me at the moment. I have a 4840 w/ approx 3500 hrs on its 466, and it is a bear to start in the cold. Have to plug it in for awhile and still sometimes use ether. It cranks plenty fast enough, and starts real easy when it's above 50 or so outside. The 8650 is a REAL BEAR when it gets cold. The 619 has to be plugged in and sometimes have to get the batt. charger out. I think the problem on both these tractors is the use of two six volt batteries to make 12 volts, but supposedly have more cranking amps. I think a 24 volt conversion is in order for the 8650, but I know dad won't spend the money. If I would fix the starter solenoid contacts (basically same problem as our dodges) it might help. If it's a 466 in that tractor, you kinda have to live with it, but you may try setting the timing back to stock and de-tune the low-end fueling just a hair. The excavating company I used to work for had an 8630 with a 619 in it, and they tried turning it up once, couldn't get the **** thing started it was getting so much fuel, wound up pluggin the heater in all the time, and you can't always do that out on the job. The 466 in the 8430 was a different story however. That thing would make clouds that looked like a pullin tractor was around somewhere!!!

Paint it red and put some Massey stickers on it, make it run like a champ. All that green paint bogs em down to much, get's into the fuel system.

There's a reason they put "MF" on the decal, and it ain't to signify "mighty fine" either. something about your mama if I recall...

Need12v your right about the "MF" and what it stands for. Just try working on one and you find out right away.

I personnally would use BLUE paint to make it run better. My blue stuff has always been real good to me without the extra cost of the green paint. The best kind is the ones with no payment.

Then again if corn was $3 and beans where $7 I could afford any color I wanted!

Hours? how many on the machine?

Rebuild or no, some of these are just hard starters. Have you done a thorough injector cleaning (Acutally remove the injectors to do this?) What fuel additives are you using?

The old Perkins-engined MF's were about the most forgetable tractors - so much so, I nearly forgot them!

10,500 hours, on our 4455 JD!
we rebuilt it at 5500 hrs, (after an air filter problem... it sucked dust!)

i guess it needs another rebuilt. yep, injectors have been checked as well!
what fuel aditive should i use. i use none!

so turning the fuel down? hows's that done on that pump?

you would offend my Dad with that!!! (its his JD!) ...not the only one! but the only one hard to start.

in my language, german, Massey: has to do sumthin that stinks... so translating the german saying of MF means EDIT pile

i heard people say: when you drive a messey, you see 5 ducks, when you climb down there are only 3! You saw more from the vibration of d engine.

ummm nevermind. didnt we talk about a hard starting 4455 JD?

dont feel like the lone ranger. Our 4230 did this fron 1000 to 8800, then was traded. A few of the deere are notorious for it. Nothing like shooting a little either in the 100 degree heat.
