Yeah, the motor sounds great when its not missing. Those 404's are some of the smoothest running motors i have ever seen. Honestly, and this will sound dumb, I havent even looked to see how many hours it has on it, or if the hour meter works. Dad bought it knowing the problems it had, and got a good deal on it, so we werent too worried with the hours. Ill check it out soon and let y'all know. I feel like it has to be a fuel related problem, and I cant wait to get it running! Its the only tractor we have ever had that I really have an interest in fixing up... And we have had many. Dad buys and sells equipment, so we have had our share. We had an old 560 farmall one time. I really liked that tractor too, other than being narrow front, but we sold it. Anyway. We may pull the pump and have it gone through soon since that is looking like it may be the problem... Anyone know how it is timed, or anything to watch out for while pulling it off? Thanks again guys! Just looking at the pictures makes me want to go out and start working on it. Darn the rain.

Actually those 4020's seem to be appreciating in resale - if anything....

Give it a good fix-up and make it look a little more like new and you could turn it around for double what you gave for it...if you even want to get rid of it.

I really wish we had kept the old IH 1066 I used as a kid, rats, I could have taken the cab off it, rebuilt it, and had a really nice semi-collectable unit there. Those seem to be going up (slowly) in value as well...lessons learned...

Im hoping we fix it up some, and keep it. My buddy has a 1066(in my gallery) that i think he is gonna sell. he was gonna build it for pulling, but decided against it. its a pretty sweet tractor too.

The 4020 is timed by removing a small cover on the right hand side of the clutch housing. There is a raised pointer cast into the side of the "window". Turn the engine over with a bar on the ring gear teeth through the window until the TDC mark on the flywheel lines up with the cast pointer. Then remove the timing window cover on the injection pump. This cover is about 1/2 inch wide and 1 1/4 inch long and held on with two screws. Inside the cover you can see the cam ring and the weight retainer. The cam ring will have a timing mark on it, and the weight retainer also has a mark. They need to line up. If you can only see the cam ring mark, you need to turn the engine over one complete turn. When the marks in the pump line up and the TDC mark on the flywheel lines up, the engine is on TDC of compression stroke for number one cylinder. Now the engine is in time and you can remove the pump. Just remove the lines and throttle linkage and the two retaining nuts and washers and lift it off.
