It's an inline four cylinder common rail turbo. Made in Italy.

Yep...the engine is codeveloped by Detroit Diesel and VM Motori (Italy)

Here is a neat article:

Sounds promising although the specs made no mention of being turbo or intercooled. Sure would be sweet for a daily driver if it was.

Too bad its Italian made....... Italians arent exactly known for quality machinery. Other thing is.. 20/27mpg?!!!!!!! The wifes 2000 Cherokee (same vehicle, different body) gets 21 around town and up to 24 hwy. I would think the diesel would do better.

Beg to differ, I've owned several Italian made diesel engines, very high quality. Problem is getting parts though. Italian farm implements are the top of the line.

I would love 20/27 mpgs, my work provided 6 cyl gasser Liberty only gets 14-16 on the highway.

Infidel, you really only get 16mpg?!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was dissapointed with what the wife's is getting. But, you have a different motor on the liberty I think. V6 isnt it?

Also, I guess I am out of line on the Italian diesel, I have no experience with them. I was referring to the Italian gassers, from what I have read it is a constant job keeping them in tune. I stand corrected.

That's on a good day. My old Explorer was better. Most of my driving is on Montana highways at 75 - 80 mph though. Don't know what it is that causes the poor mileage, the Liberty doesn't seem big or heavy. At least I don't pay the gas bill.
