Are you sure? I mean do you have something saying otherwise?
The 2009 Grand Cherokee will use a 50-state clean-diesel Cummins turbodiesel, rather than the Bosch/Mercedes V6. The Ram 1500 will also get a V6 diesel. Along with generous power and low-end torque, the new engine will provide up to 30-percent improvement in fuel efficiency and a 20-percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to an equivalent gasoline engine.
He just didn't read the new article. The GC already has the Mercedes diesel. I hope the Cummins unit works as well or better than the current diesel, that is about the timeframe I will be in the market for another SUV.

I hope we are not headed towards a repeat of the early 80's again when diesels started to hit the market in the masses after the fuel crisis.
I just looked at a new 2008 Grand Cherokee on the lot with the Mercedes diesel. Well, now in 2009 they are going to replace it with the Cummins v6? So for one year they are going to put a motor in that costs a fortune and not many will probably buy if they know its only going to be a single year option?
As much as I love diesels and would love to get all of my vehicles burning diesel, I think it might instigate a mistrust of the companies from the purchasers.
Anyone remember the early 80's? Cadillacs had diesels! They were popping diesels in anything and everything. Ten years later you couldn't give those cars away.
I just hope Chrysler doesn't screw up the publics opinions of diesels by switching engines every other year. I think there is a great advantage of going diesel and most people on here would agree, but hopefully we don't end up just popping diesels in a few vehicles for a few years just because there is a demand for better MPG.
I guess we'll see what happens. Have a good one.
Im deffinately hoping the Liberty gets another diesel! (Im waiting)

I have the V-6 Bluetec Mercedes diesel in my E-320 and couldn't be happier. Great torque & great MPG! These diesels are nothing like the failed effort of the '80's attempt to convert gasoline engines to diesel. I just returned from a 2500 mile trip and got up to 37+ MPG driving @ 75 MPH. I'm told to expect even better mileage after I get it broken in.
I'm not saying the V6 is bad. But, of course it's going to matter how the cylinders are configured. It's all about bore and stroke. Inline engines have more low end torque, and are way better than any V engine imo.
But do most Jeep and 1500 drivers need the low end torque? For them a V6 would be great. Plus a V configuration tends to be smoother, and rev quicker, both qualites that most buyers in those classes would prefer over the torque.
