I don't see this as much of a surprise... there is a bunch of preliminary testing data floating around the net about these two engines and the test vehicles were always a Ram 1500 and a Durango....

I think it shows well that Dodge/Chrysler is finally going to provide a truck that will have comparable power/acceleration/noise as a gas motor while getting much better fuel mileage in the half-ton market. Too bad the target date is so far in the future... 2010 before full production starts on the engines?? I wonder if they can afford to wait that long. Isn't it rumored that Ford, Chevy, Toyota and Nissan all want to get into the diesel half-ton market??

Nissan's diesels will be coming out in model year 2010. I think they will have a V6 in the 1/2-ton and a V8 in their new heavy duty. Last I heard the V6 will be supplied by International, but the V8 is still secret. This information came from guys working at the Nissan Plant that will be producing these vehicles. Nissan will be making the Hino here in the US also.

As far as Toyota goes, I think they dropped out of the heavy duty market all together.

The good news is that the Cummins link says:

DaimlerChrysler will be the major customer for the engine....
It would seem to reason that since Cummins will be supplying DCX with these smaller engines, that they will continue to be the provider of medium duty engines for the HD trucks.

PS: Has anybody informed Hoss of this?

about time somebody comes out with a 1/2 ton diesel.my 92 gmc has 480,000 miles on it.i've been contemplating a 4bt when the 6.2 quits, but it just keeps on going.if it holds up til the new 1/2's come out maybe i'll just have to buy one.

I wonder what type of towing capacity they will have if put in a 1/2 ton truck? Looks like I just might know what my next (second) truck will be!!

Good news by me! The 2010 target date is important, it's the second round of the much more stringent EPA emissions. By then, I may have to look into something other than old 96_12V....
