General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

info on idi's

hello all,

first of i'd like to say greetings, and hopefully this will be the first of many beneficial posts for everyone.

I am currently working on a brief history of the domestic manufacturers
diesel light duty-heavy duty pickups 1978-current models, 1/2-1.75 ton(f550/gm 5500/dodge 5500), including, chassis, diffs, tcases, trannies, cabs and spec packages. i have found very little info
regarding these on the net and the books and other publications that I have are limited in regards to these specs.

what i am currently searching for however, is information pertaining to the in-direct injected diesels from 1978-1992 5.7 gm/6.2 gm and naturally aspirated 6.5 gm( i have enough info on the 6.5turbo) as well as the 6.9/7.3na and 7.3 turbo navistar/ford engines and transmissions behind these engines as well as the differentials and transfer cases.

also more importanly since i am a hardcore mopar enthusiast(see sig.) i am also looking for info regarding the 1978 only model year of pickups that contained the 4.0L 243ci mitsubishi i-6 diesel and associated tranny/diff and tcase info, and also what model trucks had this engine as an option.

thanks for the help. more to come.....................

Hi, 78/79 Dodge came with a 4.0 (243") L6 DSL. VIN code 'H'. The engine was a 6DR5 (6DR50A) series Mitsubishi 6. An adaptor ring was used to mate the mitsi block to the Dodge 727 or standard trans. Engine considered 'light duty'
and only offered on 1/2 & 3/4 ton trucks, built at the Warren plant, 3.91 diffs. The little 6DR is relatively high revving & small displacement for a mitsi 6, shares specs & parts with the more common 4DR. Produced 1970-1991, first used in the 3.5-ton T44 Jupiter cab-over truck, then T series truck, Rosa bus, Froklifts, Loaders, Generators agricultural machinery etc. An online parts manual for it's use in the KOBELCO LK300A Loader is available at http://www.kobelcoamerica.com
