If I ever had a doubt

If I ever had a doubt, and I don't, I know another reason I drive a DODGE. For the record, I'm not trying to BASH the Fords, just tell the story. I drove the father of a good friend of mine to the DMV to take the driving portion of his CDL test today. The weather was horrable, pouring down rain the whole way there. About two miles from the testing facility the water in fuel warning sounded. We found a place to pull off to address this situation asap. Because I drive a Dodge, I anticipated simply opening the hood, draining the fuel filter and the water would be gone. Well, I couldn't find the O-SO-FAMILAR filter cannister with water drain included. What I did find was inaccurate information in the owners manual as to how to drain the water from the FCM (Fuel Conditioner Module). In order to drain the water from the FCM you first have to locate it. The owners manual will get you there, and by the way, it's located on the inside of the driver's side frame rail about the middle of the driver's door, under the truck. This means you have to lay on your back and scoot under the truck. Did I mention it was pouring? After finding the FCM and examining it thoroughly three times, I determined the owners manual was innaccurate. We placed a call to the 1-800 number in the owners manual and got the location of the nearest Ford dealer. A call to the service department, transferred twice before a very nice technician informed me the owners manual was not correct, you need a 6mm allen wrench to remove the plug from the side of the FCM to drain the water but the FCM may not have any water in it because alot of them have been defective, developing a short and registering water when there was none. Did I mention it was pouring? So, we head down the road to find a parts/hardware store to buy tools to drain the water from the underside of this 2006 F-450 with 1400 miles on the odometer. Did I mention it was pouring? We find the tools and some plastic, drain the water, the FCM is working correctly, and we're on our way. Less than two miles later, the warning goes off again. Did I mention it's STILL pouring? For those of you who may still be with me, we continued draining the FCM, even after we got back, it still had water in it. We didn't get to take the test, "It's pouring" the tester told us. dah My best guess is when they installed the flat bed a vent line was removed or not properly positioned and we just picked up the water from the spray and splash from the road. They will address that tomorrow. I have to honestly say that the location of the water drain is my real complaint. It's poor at best. Having to get on your back, under the truck to drain the water from the fuel system is not pleasant. Did I mention it's still pouring?

Talking

Ferd takes care of their dealer network...like the delay on letting the aftermarket have the design on the 6.0 PS oil filters. Customers HAD to take their trucks back to the dealer to change the oil.

It rains here in Colorado too, but its a dry rain...

I'd say a mod for that truck is a fuel filter under the hood, compliments of Ford.

Funny - in five years of owning my '96, I've drained the water trap - once!

It's just that sort of thing that really burns me, where was the thought behind that filter location! But I'l quote a Ford faithful ... Ford still builds the best truck!!

they had to go to the ford dealer to get the oil filter. That would be a pain in the azz.Its a pain for us with the 48re having to go to the dealer for tranny fluid. That is screwed up that is the only place we can get tranny fluid it ought to be aginst the law to do that.I put going to the dealer in the same category as going to get a root canal.

You DO NOT have to go to the Dodge dealer for tranni oil. There are other approved produts on the market and for a lot less than the dealer price.

no room.
Really no point in owning a 6.0PSD. Filters are stupid expensive, oil change interval is way too soon. You have to pay an upcharge for the diesel, and then it is more expensive per mile to run than a gasser. Not to mention the long term reliability.
I really hope Ford pulls their heads outa their butts with the new engine they have up their sleeve for '07. Two bad motors in a row and you might even see the guys who bleed blue walking away from them. This is just another kick in the nads for the diesel industry in North America. People were just forgetting about the GM junk in the 70's.
