I think you'll have a tough time getting anything better than the Michelin LTX M/S. E rated. Quiet on concrete. Excellent traction on ice and snow. Smooth and well handeling in the dry. Should last about 60K miles.

I have about 10k on my Michelin LTX A/T 2 and love the traction on snow and rain. I have noticed with the windows down the tires are a little more noisy than the stock Michelins, a guess is 2X more. I didn't have to switch to 4 wheel drive everytime I drive on snow with the newer tires. I don't see any wear on them yet. According to the tire specification sheet these tires are to last longer than the stock and I got just 60k on the first set. FYI

As you stated that you "tow a race car bout every weekend or our 19 ft bay liner" my self I would not buy D rated tires if your towing and get in a wreck an your insurance company notices that you used the wrong rated tires they have the right to limit your coverage an what they will pay.

coopers are no good in my opinion .I had a tire account at a cooper tire dealer a few years back and had several blow outs that did lots of damage to the trucks , and one put me in the ditch . I quit buying them and have only 1 blow out since then, and it was some odd ball tire that was on a truck when i bought it . been running toyos and Michelin's now and I like them. My .02

We run Firestone Destination AT's on all our work trucks/vans. We carry a ton of equipment in the back of the service vans, air compressor,lder/ gen. a lot of brass fittings and other junk and have never had a problem with tires. As for a smaller 1 ton wrecker, we run a commercial Goodyear, G933. E load rated, and they wear very well, it's a drive but we run em all the way around, and the truck handles nicely, no noise, and pretty good traction in snow and rain

..btw I saw ya mentioned ya haul a race car and ur from Iowa, you goin to Knoxville at all this weekend for the big sprint car nat'ls?

I was told a 1 ton is required to have E rated tires. Discount Tire even gave me two tires when they discovered they had put two C rated tires on my truck by mistake.

All the newer 3/4 tons come with and have the door plate specify to use E rated tires.

I have a set of 285 series Cooper Discoverer ATRs on my truck and they are nice. They have about 20,000 miles on them now and haven't worn much. While they are load range d rated, the pound rating is similar to a load range e, so I don't see a problem for occasional towing.

Saw a set of BFG's All Terrain KO in 285/65/18 that had 6 ply's on the tread and 3 ply's for the sidewall and I was surprised to see that it was rated as load range E! I also saw Goodyear Assurance car tire that had 1 ply sidewall and 3 ply on the tread, no wonder I'm seeing more cars with flat tires or with big blowouts on the side of the road.
