How much should a saftey cost? (Canada)

I need to have a certification done on the truck, and am quoted $99.99 CDN from the dealer. Is this a standard cost? or does it vary from mechanic to mechanic?

Varys from place to place. The biggest expense wil be how much work they tell you u need.

A safety certification inspection should be quoted at 1 hour of labour. Whatever the hourly shop rate is, is what you should expect to pay.

You guys have it rough... A provincial inpection here is 25$ flat rate , plus tax , no matter if it takes them 4 hours , it is 25$ , and that includes a follow up inspection if needed. Most shops just give the vehicle a quick once over , shake the steering wheel , etc , slap a sticker on and send you on your way.

Yikes....it isn't anything like that here! Fake inspections usually go for $200 around here and are quite popular with older vehicles because the inspections can be quite rigorous.....in Ontario, if you have a GVWR over 4500 kg (roughly 10000 lbs) you have to have an annual safety inspection. Most duallies, including me, register just under 4500 kg to get around that. Since pickups don't have to stop at the chicken coups here, we seem to get away with it.

Everything short of motorcycles ( at least i think they are exempt) Is subject to an annual inspection, Price is set by the province , it is a visual inspection only, no emissions testing etc (yet). You can buy a sticker from some of the more shady people around the countryside for 40-50$ (including the proper paper work) but they are not fake , sometimes possibly stolen , but i never hear tell of fake ones.

I did not have any trouble getting my truck past inspection , even with the missing catalytic converter , couple of rust holes , and front suspension that needs a little work.

Windsor area

We're charging $25-$40 as any normal safety in this area which usually includes follow up. We had a garage that was offering a free emission test with every safety. Everyone found out that he doubled the safety price to ($70) to cover the cost of the e-test and now nobody will go to the crook.
