in 117k mine has not had a single problem (knock on wood). That would be pretty scary though to have the hood come flying up.

corrosion? I guess it's good that I have been lubing mine with some heavy spray lube since I bought the truck. Little maintenance goes a long way.

A year after I bought my '96 (in 2002) the dealer I took the truck to exchanged both the primary & secondary hood latch for free due to a recall. No need to get too excited, if they recall it, it's free to have the work done.

That being said, with a hood as large as these truck use, D-C should really have placed 2 hood latches (primary) on these truck, with one secondary. Most European cars have them, and it would have prevented the "hood flutter" that mine and other 2nd gens tend to have. Sometimes cost savings end up costing a manufacturer much more than they ever could have anticipated.

I know someone who thought this happened. Turned out the entire sheet of paint lifted off of his hood at once and laid over the windshield. It was one of the Chevy's with the factory cancer paint job. Talk about a mind blower. It was a trip to see. I got to see the full sheet. Too bad it was before we all had cell phone cameras.

Reminds me of years ago when the hood latch failed on my old '60s International pickup.
The hood flew up, broke off and landed in the bed.
I didn't even slow down.
Truck never had a hood again for as long as I owned it, made it easy to check the oil.

Sorry, but it makes me smile thinking about that happening to you...

Glad nothing happened, and it was probably the best use for that useless hood anyway.

Sheesh - I almost had that happen to me the other day on my truck, but it was owner stupidity related - not the trucks fault :-)

There is an old recall on the secondary latch. I keep mine oiled up, so it hasn't been an issue.

Yea the recall staopped in 2000 i think. 3 weeks ago my dad was goin over the mountain in the 01 and it happened. Hood came up and folded at the hinges and laid againt the window, but didnt break it luckily. There is coffee all over the inside tho now cause he didnt know what to do and just tossed the coffee up in the air because the the road is full of turns and the window was up so he could stick his head out.

I wonder how many of these failure were just somone not closing the hood all the way, or popping the hood to check something only to forget they did and go about their day.

I've done that plenty of times.

That Dodge hood wobble is a little unnerving. I have a little bug shield on top of the hood which generates a little bit of downforce (at the cost of drag).

Only hood "wobble" I get is from pure torque.
