Exclamation Help Me Decide !!!! Yay Or Nay

ok check it out i just came back from looking at some trucks i found a 1998 or 1999 2500 CTD 5 speed the body is pretty straight on a scale of one to ten i give the body an 8 .. inside i give it about an 8.5 ac window locks everything works . the truck needs a resignation gear or something like that it scratches when you try to put it into 3rd I went to go check out the tranny place between 500-660 dollars to repair. the truck almost has about 200k but the pirice is 6k i know the guy i might be able to get it for 5,500 what do you think thanks -brandon

Condition and maintenance history is everything. (to me)

Sounds like the condition is good to go, what about the maintenance? Those years were very tough on injection pumps, maybe the worst actually.

I would like to know that it has good fuel pressure, know what if any warranty work was done......

Go to any dealer with the VIN off of the truck, they should be able to tell you what has been done under warranty (specifically looking for lift pump or VP=44 replacements).

Well, good question.

At this point (10-11 years later) you would like to think that it has. Of course, some last longer than others, I've heard of them going out at 13K miles, others (lucky souls) get 200K out of one. I would just like to know. The trick is, usually if the owner doesn't know how sensitive the injection pump is (in relation to keeping adequate fuel pressure), then there is more of a reason to investigate it's history a little further. I have read MANY times, people buy new (used) trucks, thousand miles later they find out they are into a $1,500 repair to get it running again. Hit and miss they are, that is for sure.

Do a search, there are cheap ways to check the fuel pressure.

at 6k you should of some money left over for some the little repairs that are going to pop up and money for the injection pump if ti goes out. Find out if it is a 98 or 99', if 98 it could be a 12v motor w/o all the injection pump probs.

By checking the FP you can at least tell if it has a decent functioning lift pump as of now. Starving the VP-44 for fuel by having a dead or dying LP is probably the most common reason for failure.

53 block is a much debated subject, I must default to telling you to search the topic, just too much information to go over here.

All 6-speeds are 24V, but not all 24Vs are 6-speed.

They made 5-speed 24V trucks as late as 2004, if I remember correctly.

What Hohn said. The six speeds came in with the arival of the HO wich I balive was around 2000-2001. The 24 Valve came in at 98.5. All manuals where 5 speeds till the HO came out. If hte truck is clean and has been taken care of $6k is probobly abought rite for those miles. Jack it up and check the front ball joints and tie rod ends to. With those miles they are probobly shot. Thats not a cheap repair either.
