Heard a nice sounding Power Stroke today

At one of my dealerships I go to every week, one of the mechanics that works there has an 03 F250 FX-4 with the 6.0. He has a dual 4" MBRP exhaust out of the rear corners and some kind of a chip. Well I finally heard it today. First I heard it across the lot idling. The dual rears made the sound of a idling jet. Then he pulled it into the garage. He said he has the turbo cranked up to 12-15 psi at idle and 50-60 psi at 4k rpm. His turbo at 15mph sounds like mine at highway acceleration. The "conduit" for the duals is pretty impressive. Actually the best I have ever seen out of the corners. It had some interesting curves with the single entry and dual exit muffler.

The only thing I found interesting was the 20 different noises coming from the truck.
First was the engine rattle itself. Then a hum that sounds like it would be a gasser and not a diesel. Third a weird hiss coming from the dual pipes. Finally last, the loudest turbo whine I have ever heard that makes you realize it is not a gasser. Mix all of those together and it made an interesting sound. Some may like, some may not.

He said it has been in the shop a few times. Supposedly he had a problem getting an after market piece because it was stopped due to the problems in the 03. However it was available for an 04.

It also hard to work on as he pointed out.

All in all a nice truck! I will keep my Cummins though.

Hard to believe he's running 50-60lbs of boost in that engine. With the sintered metal connecting rods that engine is a ticking time bomb.

How can you have any boost at idle? Know what you mean about the sound though. My roomate has a 6.0 with a 4 inch exhaust. Definitely sounds like a 747.

Sounds like to me he fed you a line of B.S. big time. As far as the 50-60psi at 4k, he isnt doing that with the stock head gasket much less the stock bottom end.

You cant "crank up" a turbo. You can change the impeller to gain a better map efficiency and low end spoolup as well as changing the turbine housing which effects how much volume the housing holds until exhausted which relates to low end.

Exhaust leaving the manifold is what turns the impeller and shaft. The thicker and faster it leaves relates to how fast the turbo spins. If he had enough fuel to make 12-15psi at idle, he would smoke like a freight train, and wash his cylinder walls down very quickly.

You cant build 12-16psi at idle. The only way you can build boost standing still is loading the engine with your foot on the brake and in drive. Which goes back to the amount of fuel each cylinder is recieving and how thick and how fast it is being entered into the turbo.

The reason why his sounds so much louder than yours is because of the VGT turbo. All VGT equipped engines up to a 60 series Detroit whistle loud but dont build that kind of boost.

More like 0 pounds of boost at idle and 28 of boost under load, that guy must be a The exhaust does sound good (differnt) I like the sound with a strait pipe, but the engine is junk so it really doesn't matter

I kind of raised my eyebrows when he said what the psi was at idle. I didn't really say too much. THis chip he had was about the size of a cd jewel case and it sat on the battery. He said this computer chip cranks up the psi. I just usually say "OH REALLY". All I can say is that this thing made some noise at idle. I will see what else I can get out of him.

Thanks for the info Monty!!

Next time you see him, ask him to start it up, so you can see his boost gauge holding 15psi at idle. I find that VERY, VERY, VERY hard to believe. And at 60psi WOT the head gaskets would probably go so fast it would make your head spin .

ya. I cant see more then 30lbs at WOT with the current offering of boxes. straight piped with the cat removed sounds sick with the new turbo the 6.0's are using.

The only V8 diesel that I ever could say I liked the sound of was the 8V Detroits.

I think the Powerstrokes with straight pipes sound like misery dipped in *dung*, but then I don't care much for loud diesels at all. I got my fill of listening to straight piped 335's in rattle-trap Diamond T cabs a long time ago.
