"Half-ton" trucks - Significance of rating?

I've often wondered about the ratings given to trucks- 1500 is half-ton, 2500 is 3/4 ton, 3500 is 1-ton. What do those tonnage ratings refer to? Ford is running a new commerical stating that their F-150(a half-ton truck) can carry 3050lbs. That's 1.5 tons. How is a so-called half-ton truck rated at 1.5 tons? Can someone explain this to me?

The ratings used to be accurate years ago, they just never changed them, from what I understand.

Ford's payload has been quite high for some time. Back in around 2000, with the F-150's 7700 package came out, it was around 1400 kg.
