I guess they're not making paper towels the way they used to, because I managed to get three full rolls in there by just re-rolling them tighter. I think hanging it from the right-front corner of the bed is probably a new mounting variation. That was the only place I could find where the thing would fit properly, completely out of the way. Took 22' of tubing to connect it, but oh well. It was a three person job getting it in there, with both my daughters holding bolts and associated hardware while I jockeyed it into position. The darned thing weighs about 45lbs. full of oil! Yes, I did pre-fill this one, just this one time to check for leaks before I committed it to installation. Took over two hours to get it filled with about 5 quarts.
If this truck doesn't turn out to be one of the million-mile Dodge Cummins, it won't be for my lack of trying!

Inquiring Minds want to know more about the design of this bypass. Did you engineer it or is it a kit you found or what ? What is supposed to be the micron this thing filters down to ?
The tubing is 1/4" Weatherguard dual-layer nitrile-core rated for 300 psi, so it's plently strong enough for the oil pressure. Gulf Coast has been around for a long time, typically installed on larger trucks. They have several models to choos from. I believe this is a mid-range model or thereabouts. Gulf Coast rates this one for diesels up to 250hp. Being a cellulose-based media (paper towels) like the Franz TPs or Motorguards, it should be filtering out particles down to the sub-micron range. I took the extra step of re-rolling the media very tightly myself to ensure that happens!
I think the reason you don't see them on more diesel pickups is because alot of people just aren't aware of the benefits of bypass filtration, in general. And in the case of anything that doesn't need changed quite frequently, they are pretty darn big. As far as engineering is concerned, all I did was fab up a few bits of hardware for a good mount and basically just ran the plumbing. I was watching it through the fill tube while running and guesstimate it looks to be pushing about 1-2 quarts a minute - a steady, slow stream.
It will be a messy pain in the butt to change, but that will only be once a year after the end of this summer. I plan to do a complete change with Rotella 5w40 and only annual filter changes (both) thereafter. I'll run Lube Control in the oil and send in a sample in for analysis before the filter changes and just see how it goes. I expect swapping out 6+ quarts with the filter changes should keep it in good shape indefinitely without ever needing to remove the oil drain plug ever again.
