Got Sirius question...

Can anyone tell me if my Sirius radio will work north of the border into Canada? I am traveling there next week and I am just curious.

Yes, but it's geosynchronous
(meaning it's circling the earth at the same speed the earth is rotating, so it's hanging above the same spot all the time),
and the earth is not flat.

Satellite TV like Dish Network and Direct TV don't work too far north into Canada, so it is a valid question.

99% sure you can't get Sirius in Alaska fer instance.

I would hazard a guess that it will work, unless you are going into the backwoods of extreme northern Canada.

Just because its a satellite does not mean you get world wide coverage.

drafto,
Can you look on the Sirius website to see if they have a coverage area?
I have Sirius as well and am interested in the answer to your question.
I believe that the satellites only cover the US, but you would probably get reception a little ways across the border, so it would depend on how far in you go.

Sirius Satellites are in an elliptical orbit around the earth (XM uses geo-stationary, meaning they are always in the same location relative to a point on the earths surface), therefore if you are in a fringe area, you might get varying reception.

Do a google search on "Sirius reception Canada"
I did, and found out that quite a few people have posted as being able to receive a good signal in Canada. You just can't purchase it if you live in Canada (yet, they are working on that).

This is a pretty sophisticated conversation I started, thank you all for the sattalite education! The area we travel to is in Southern Ontario, about 2 hours north of Watertown, NY. We normally take this fishing trip in September and being football junkies we bring my DirecTV dish and we are able to get a signal. After seeing some of the replies I think I may be okay for getting the Sirius signal. If anyone comes up with anything else, let me know!!!

Thanks,
Dan

"Sirius reception in Canada will be excellent, as the service even works relatively well into Anchorage, Alaska. In Anchorage there is about a 1-2 hour down period everyday where the satellites are not focused enough around Alaska to be received there, but when it comes in, it comes in great. There has been reports of Sirius reception has far as Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory, Quebec, and in Nova Scotia. So i'm sure it will work far into Canada, and border cities like Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto, etc do not even phase it."

I just clipped this from one of the Google search pages.

Drafto, I run sirius satellite radio in my service truck. I am based in sunny downtown whitehorse yukon, and can say 100% for sure that it works all the way up the northern highway, and over the ice roads into tuktoyaktuk NWT.

There are a few dead zones about 70 miles south of dawson city on the klondike highway, and about ten miles southeast of pink mountain in BC, but other than that, the reception is great all the time

And no lame commercials. HA HAHA.

This is the new "FM", just like people in the 70's said "What, pay for Television? over my dead body!", now we all know those people happily pay their cable or Direct TV bill these day's right?
In my opinion this will eventully make FM what AM is today. So, if they don't extend up North very far, they will soon!

Does anyone else find it odd that Atlantic City is singled out on the GIF of the entire world? LOL I'm in New Jersey so it just struck me as odd.

Every year the weather forcast calls for rain the first 5 days. Never fails! It always (knock on wood) seems to clear up for us. I am more worried about the bugs, we normally get up there in September and they are never an issue. I have just heard horror stories about the bugs. We fish on Bennett Lake, right near Balderson.

LOL!.....yeah the bugs can get bad out there! July is by far the worst time for bugs out that way.....If you are going in May or June, you won't have to worry about them.....have a great time!
