gas or diesel
gas or diesel
alright, I am buying a new 2500 and don't know if i should get gas or diesel. I don't tow any big trailers, just fourwheelers for me and my friends and maybe a small fishing boat. This will also be my daily driver and I do alot of traveling, average 4,000 miles per month. I really like the fuel milage of the diesel and how many miles you can put on an engine. I am sure the hemi is up to what i tow, but don't know if it will last the miles. Any input will be appreciated.

Todd

The Hemi is still just a gasoline engine that gets dismal fuel mileage. At nearly 50K a year, that gasoline engine won't last more than 3 or 4 years before you'll need to tear it down.
Re:gas or diesel
Well, first, your answers here may be just slightly biased as it is DIESELtruckresource.com.

The diesels usually cost a little more if your buying new. However, in terms of mileage/pulling-power ratio, you cant go wrong with a diesel.
Ive heard the Hemis are getting about 14 to 16 unloaded and drops when worked.
While the diesels (once broken in) will drop to around 15 when worked, and can get up to 20+ depending on gearing and drivers right foot.
Diesels are usually easier to maintain and generally go longer before maintainance... but parts can cost more.
Go Diesel!!!!

If money is not a problem.. get the diesel.. it will really help the resale of the truck down the road..

If you hate shelling out almost $5k for the diesel - you may have to put the pencil to the paper to see it if would be more economical in the long run - figure out your annual mileage - compare gas vs dsl mpg's - and then compare cost between gas and diesel.. see what you would spend a yr for both

when I first started looking i really wanted the diesel.. but hated the $4,600 expense.. BUT when i looked at the 1500 with the 5.7ish/350 cu inch motors that had listed MPG's of 11/13 on the window, i thought the diesel would be a cost saver.. I get 16.5 - a tad over 17 mpg just running around town - 15 to 15.5 towing compact tractor.. the best i got was 18.3 on a trip down the parkway doing about 40 mpg the entire time..

good luck

That would also be about an oil change a month on a gasser. You will save in fuel and maintenance costs no doubt! That would sway me to the diesel.

I did have a 2000 2500 V10. I know that probably get's worse gas mileage than the new HEMI, but probably not by much. I averaged 6 MPG towing with it. With the diesel (still not even broke in) I average about 14. My best empty (so far) MPG was a hair over 19. This summer, I bet it goes over 20. Might be a little bit more upfront, but it's worth it in the long run. Plus, the engine is going to outlast that gasser by a long shot. ;D

Tony

Re:gas or diesel
I agree with the others, at 4000 miles per month you are going to run out of warrenty and run the engine into the ground possible before it is payed off!

Diesel is better at MPG, longer lasting (350,000 miles) and pulls and hauls more!

The extra money you send now will save you much more later!

Also the resale is higher on the CTD than any gas type engine!

KC
