FYI: Valve stems recall

Discount Tire sent a letter to me about a recall on "certain rubber valve stems" they put on my car about two years ago. Three of the four were cracked. They are the Dill Brand, not sure you can tell by looking at the stem. Mine were cracked at the base of the stem by the rim. Just an FYI, you may want to check your auto's and trailers.

I had a valve stem fail about a month back...

Took all of a touch while cleaning a rim and it just gushed out all the air in about 5 minutes.

So far got 3 changed and have to do the other soon...

I was sitting on a parking lot 2 summers ago, waiting to get a load of cars. All of a sudded I hear BOOM, PSSSST and my front right tire went flat immediately.

What the heck ??? I looked and my valve stem blew apart and got shot across the lot. Luckily I was still and not driving.

Since then I request the metal bolted type on all my tires. No more rubber for me

Replaced ALL the stems on truck and fiver with steel!! Lost a tire on the fiver and it shredded the wheel well. Why on earth do they put rubber stems on an E rate tire??

My wife got the same letter for the Michelins we had Discount Tire put on her car about 4 years ago. Took it in and got 'em swapped out last weekend.

well valve stems do not last forever.

and be careful with metal ones and what type of cap you use on them. remove them regularly or good luck removing them when they corrode on there. you will not get them off without damaging the valve stem

especially when it comes to a vehicle equiped with tire preassure monitors.

Well, a week ago Saturday I was in Discount tire to get my CTD's tires rebalanced and rotated. I gave the guy my name and he said there is a recall on our '99 Dodge MiniVan's tire stems.. I said I hadn't gotten any letter yet.(When I got home, the letter was sitting in the mailbox!!)
Anyway, I sat down in the lobby to wait for my truck's turn, I just happened to pick up a trade magazine for the tire industry. In it they had an in-depth article on the tire stem recall issue... It seems ALL the faulty tire stems were made by a Chinese manufacturer (of course)with an unpronounceable name.. In the same paragraph, it said stems from Dill Manufacturing "A SUBSIDIARY OF" the SAME chinese manufacturer, are also involved in the recall. (go figure!)

The one thing of note I took from the article was that SCHRADER brand tire stem products were NOT involved in the recall! It seems the Schrader company is still a western owned and operated company and none of their products are made in China...
So, see if you can ask for SCHRADER tire stems and you won't have to worry about the NEXT chinese faulty product recall...

K.

When you have tires changed, remember to tell the techie that you have a monitor on the wheel. The cost of a new monitor is $400 and I didn't have to pay for it - they did.

Always have the techies install metal valve stems and the proper caps.
