Funny story about 6 cyl and V-8 diesel

I read the thread about everyone thinking that the 6 cyl is a small motor and thought this would go pretty good with that. One of my dad's buddys just went and bought a brand new ford f-450 4x4 with the 8 cyl 6.0 liter Powerchoke and 6 speed automatic tranny in it. He had the bright idea that his big F-450 could out pull my 97' 2500 5 spd with a 410 rear end. So we hooked bumper to bumper to have a liitle pull. I told him we could use 4 wheel drive but no brakes. I put mine in 4 high and granny and waited for the word go. At first he pulled me a few feet but that soon ended I dropped the hammer and belched black smoke. Once i got moving i never looked back. I drug him about 15 feet before he gave in. When i got out i said man don't you just love that cummins torque ?!? He said he never would have thought that a 6 cyl could out pull that V-8. What they don't understand is that the V-8 is a performance diesel and the 6 cyl is an industrial diesel. IN MY MIND POWERCHOKE AND DURAMAX AIN'T GOT NOTHIN' ON CUMMINS!!!!!

not gonna say i've never done it... but I WILL say now that i'm older(and maybe a little wiser) I will never do that again.... good way to break axles and drivelines. Braggin' rights are cool though.
I won a progressive sled pulling competition with my '01 Sportsman 500 H/O DUSE a couple years back.... what a rush... Honda came in second, but it was a DISTANT second.

Love the story, those powerpukes I agree have nothin on a Cummins. I work at a Discount Tire and Two guys there drive the 7.3 powerpukes and I was talking to one of them and he said that the Cummins was a poorly built diesel and I was shocked it was like a sludge hammer to my head . He also told me that my 92 was a piece of junk so I said what do you know you drive a ferd. I tried telling him that he was out of his mind, and after a while he just walked away. Those high and Mighty powerjoke owners. I hate arguing with Powerjoke owners they think that they know everything

Cummins forever

People like that are so ignorant I wouldn't even know what to say.

But wow, I bet that guy really felt crappy when you out pulled him. Seriously, you should've just let him be happy for buying a new truck.

I've mentioned this somewhere else, but I was talking to a friend that sells dynos for diesel engines. He drives an 04 3500. I asked why he chose that over the Ford or Chevy. Here is is response:

"Why would I want to have a truck with an engine designed for a tractor? I want an engine designed for a truck."

So, ask those powerstroke guys how well their tractor is holding up.

But the 5.9 was designed for tractors, not trucks. It was a collaboration between CASE and Cummins for construction and agricultural use long before we were blessed with it in our Dodge frames.

If you are referring to configuration of inline 6 cylinders, I see the point, but many tractors use it too. Besides: Aren't big rigs considered Tractors by definition also???

Yeah cummins is an industrial diesel. The inline 6 or some other inline diesel is used in almost every tractor, dozer, dumptruck, and big rig ever created. The V-8 diesel used in chevy and ford was made for truck purposes only. Some gasser thought that they could create more power with their 8 cylinders than the inline 6 could produce. But they were wrong. It is a performance diesel not designed for the work and strain that the cummins is built to withstand. Another inline diesel is made by caterpillar that used to be used in chevorlet. Some of the old topkicks I've found had an inline 6 cat. They were pretty bad as well. But yeah the V-8 was created when someone thought that an 8 cylinder diesel would outperform 6. And you will never see a V-8 diesel in a tractor, sorry.

alot of people i've met... not everyone who drive powerjokes aren't really into diesel performance most people just like the ford chassis and a motor that goes grumble-grumle and has a turbo that whistles....but some powerjoke guys are relentless about they have a better motor alot of it is just ignorence... in the ag world theres alot of old 4wd articulated tractors that have a v style motor in them and people pay good money to swap in an inline six....................it's all about the torque baby

Exactly. Power is up and down not round and round.

Diesel math - 6 > 8

Just ask a ford guy why they dont put the v-8 in the F650 and up. They use a 5.9 at a lower HP than in the 2500 dodge (and yes a lot of cats even though they are junk). When you move up to a real medium duty truck you need a real medium duty motor. That usualy makes them shut up.
