fuel quality
fuel quality
What is the difference in diesel fuel and premium #2 diesel fuel. The Texaco gas station I use is being closed down by the Shell corp, for not selling enough gas and fuel(Which really sucks). I have been only using #2 premium fuel in my new dodge. I was told that running premium would get me better gas mileage, and was a cleaner fuel. No other station sells premium, so I must run regular diesel. Is there a difference? I live in the Colorado Rocky mountains, and drive from 5500 ft. to 9500 feet most days. Will I notice a power loss, or might have a fuel system problem with the regular diesel. If I might what suggestions do you have. Thanks for helping the noobie!
Re:fuel quality
I tried the Texaco Premium for a couple of fills, but saw no difference in mileage or perceived performance. I'm not sure, but it may have a slightly higher Cetane rating than others. I get mine from "Jack's Gas" :
, a little no name place in town, and the stuff performs the same as the Texaco stuff. I see and sometimes have to wait for big rigs to fill so I know he goes thru a lot. I think my filter was a bit crudded up when I changed it recently though.

Re:fuel quality
Another noobie here. According to the owner's manual, the ISB is designed to run on 40 or greater cetane fuel. The Amoco (BP) premier diesel has a cetane rating of minimum 50. But who knows what's in the tank when you fill up?? It's supposed to give you better cold start-ups, better mileage, and performance. However, this time of year, the winter blend does not yeild the economy of straight #2. Cetane ratings aren't posted around here, you have to ask. And most of the time the attendants have no idea what you're asking. The local Amoco station readily provided info on their product.

Re:fuel quality
Ya, that's true, the sulphur content gives the fuel superior lubrication qualities. I always use a fuel additive to bring that lubricity up to spec for the VP44 -- wish I could get Stanadyne, but I've settled on the Shell variety.

GP
