Well, I owned one, so I know. I did love my Cummins, it was the Dodge that wasn't working out for me.

Oh, and Ben, EXCELLENT POST. You read my mind and beat me to it. I just gotta add one thing:

sure they are fast but throw some weight behind them and we will see who makes it to the top
My Duramax pulls better and harder than my Cummins ever did, and gets better mileage doing it.

FATCAT..... same here, I used to be die-hard GM guy. Until I bought my wife a brand new car back in '92. The car almost got me and my whole family killed TWICE. (ABS malfunctions that equalled no brakes at all) Dealership and GM absolutely refused to do anything about it. Not only that, the GM rep actually told the dealership I should be BILLED for the troubleshooting. This was with less than 4000 miles on it. I took the car to the Dodge house and took a massive loss on it. I've been driving Dodges ever since.

I've also seen A LOT of Duramaxes give up way before that! But I've seen A LOT MORE Cummins go way past that...

Duramax's are older than that. They are built by Izuzu and they've been around before WWII.

BTW, Cummins has been around longer than 70 years.

The DuraMax is a great engine, they are fast and powerful.

They are also the only real competition in the light duty truck market that the Cummins has. Anything International builds for Ford is proven JUNK once Ford gets their hands on it - except for the 7.3, but that was hardly a "great" engine.

The fact reamins that the Cummins is the only medium duty engine in the light duty market, and that the Cummins is a proven winner in all facets of diesel competition...

As for 1,000 HP - the D-Max crew has Keith and his Nasty Girl...

Cummins have been there many times...

And it won't be long before someone writes a program similar to EFILive for the Cummins...

I'm happy to see a worthy opponent for the engineers at Cummins...

I am a Chevy guy at heart (because of my dad and grandfather), so I hope the D-Max sticks around for a while (Even though I LOVE my Dodge and Cummins)

You are misinformed! The Duramax engine was designed, and developed in the late 90's, and was first released in late Summer 2000, as an 2001 model. It was never around before that. Sure Isuzu has been around for a very long time, but not the Duramax............. The Cummins has been offered in the Ram since about 1988, or 1989, that is a 12-13 year headstart on the Duramax in pickup trucks. Not to mention that the same basic engine was produced for many years before that....... The Duramax does have a headstart over Cummins when it comes to computer controled electronics... But it will even out rather quickly.......

The Duramax is pretty stout. My mother has an 02 LB7, and while it's had it's share of problems, GM has stood behind it 110%, unlike Ford did with so many trucks. It's been a good truck, and once the early bugs(less than 15k miles) were worked out, she hasn't had any worries. Injectors are going to get done soon, the dealer said it was precautionary from the history of the truck. It pulled a CTD backwards on a trailer, grossing 17k together, like nothing.

To compare the Dmax and Cummins head to head is unfair, they are two completely different animals. The inline design and v-block design make for different torque curves, power deliver, rev capability, amount of parts and so on. The simplicity of the Inline 6 CTD is what lends itself to longevity/reliability. But give credit where credit is due, for being a relatively new design, the Dmax has proven itself. They 'experiemented' with the heads, but it hasn't hurt them. The CTD is a proven design, which only needs slight improvements to make it better. Hats off to Isuzu/GM, for thinking out of the box and coming up with something that makes good power and holds together well.

Hey guys, my friend (new '07 Duramax owner) is thinking about getting a bigger rim/tire combo. So he's going to sell me his stockers. Do I still need to bore out the center? If so, how much?
