Friend picked up a new Duramax...
i'll give the duramax it's props...it can handle alot of power increase on modules/chips/computer stuff alone with stock components...it is a MUCH lighter engine and surprisingly i have never heard of any problems with those aluminum pistons (except of course for thos odd ***** that run with no gauges at full throttle for 1 hour non stop)...i hate to say that for the daily dirver the duramax might be able to get more from programmers than the cummins...but for ultra high performance the cummins is still king....i realize the GM trucks have IFS front ends but I actually never heard of problems there either...but just lookign at them compared to the solid axle design makes me worry
I wouldn't turn my nose up at the duamax. My father has one with the allison and it goes pretty good. It has been pretty reliable as well. I don't like the gm ifs and a frame that hangs down low. My beef is with the body design, not the motor.

Do you mean our aluminum heads? No worries at all. It was a new idea when they first came out, but all the worries were pretty much unfounded. I switched from Dodge to Chevy. I loved my Cummins, and I'm pleased with my Duramax, but for me, I found the Chevy to fit my needs better OVERALL.
Pretty sure the Cummins' pistons are aluminum too.

I'm just curious...
A REAL crew cab with an 8' bed was the main concern. The four door Dodge quad cab was not much bigger than the extended cab I traded in, and the MegaCab is not available with an 8' bed. That left Ford and Chevy as my primary options. I just wasn't comfortable with a new Ford considering the issues with their new engines, so I went with the Chevy.
Another reason I chose Chevy was the Allison. My 2001 Dodge was a 6sp, and frankly, I was tired of shifting gears and wanted an auto. Some people say the Allison tranny is mostly hype, and while I don't think its the "be-all/end-all", its tough, and a dream to tow with.

You're not the only one who complains about Dodge not having a TRUE crew cab...
They (the duramax) seem to be getting better for the 1 ton and below market. The LB7 engine was somewhat of a learning experience for Isuzu. I was impressed that they admitted to it and put a 200,000 mile warranty on the injectors. There isn't a good fix for those engines, but atleast they didn't keep trowelling them out. They redesigned it to the LLY (i think) and fixed alot of the issues.
IMHO, as long as Ford is building the flame thrower model.... Dodge and Chevy both will enjoy increasing truck sales!

I'm driving a new style Chevy Silverado rental right now while the dealer fixes the scratches they put on my truck, and it's ugly as sin. But drop a diesel in it and I may be able to tolerate it. The diesel powertrain is great, I just can't stand what its mounted in...
the duramax has just as many problems as the fords well almost. they will prove themselves when you see a ton of them with 3-4-500,000 miles on them with 500 hp as daily drivers and not breaking. sure they are fast but throw some weight behind them and we will see who makes it to the top. plus gms new truck designs are from drunk blind guys
If GM would provide a 6 or 7 speed manual transmission I might take a look at one ... but my old 1988 Chevy 2500 with a 350 V8 left such a bad taste in my mouth that I swore I would never purchase a GM product again.

dmax has just as many problems as ford. ha ha ok.
"sure they are fast but throw some wiehgt behind them" Ya know, Ive seen this phrase umpteen million times and I dont understand it.
HP is HP and torque is torque no matter which way you look at it. A 360hp truck is going to pull faster and harder than a 300hp truck, I dont care what anyone says. Now if you both hold the trucks at 1600rpm up the hill, I would definetly say the cummins would beat pretty much anything up the hill. But going WOT from the bottom, it doesnt matter, the higher hp and higher tq truck will win.there are losts of mildly tuned (edge juice and stuff} dmax's with 3-4-500000 miles...I saw a Juice'd crew cab dually go on ebay with 525k. I heard of another one finally giving up and dieing at 505k (yeah ok sorry, I know, if it were a cummins it would have gone a million, 505k is pathetic}....
A 500rwhp daily driven cummins with 400,000+ miles on it that has not been touched?? {including head gaskets}...lets see it
I know there are more than a few with 200k on them and big power, but I think 500k is stretching it a little.
