Ford Motor company is recalling about 1.8 million diesel-powered heavy duty pickup trucks and vans because of a computer software problem that could cause their engines to stall.
The trucks being recalled are F-series Super Duty trucks, E-series vans and Excursion SUVs from model years 1997 through 2003 equipped with 7.3-liter diesel engines, according to a letter sent by Ford (Charts, Fortune 500) to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

DETROIT (Dec. 6) - Ford Motor Co. said Thursday it is recalling 1.17 million trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans to fix an engine sensor that could lead to engine stalling.
AP
The recalled vehicles are all from the 1997-2003 model years with 7.3 liter diesel engines, including the Ford E-Series van, Excursion full-size sport utility vehicle, and F-450 Super Duty and F-550 Super Duty trucks.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a posting on its Web site that the camshaft position sensor located on the engine could function intermittently and lead to an engine stall and potential crash.
The sensor is an electrical component that helps regulate the fuel going into the engine.
Ford spokesman Dan Jarvis said there have been 14 accidents associated with the problem, but no injuries reported.
In the event of an engine stall, Jarvis said drivers traveling at speeds greater than 30 miles per hour would have full power steering and power braking, allowing them to pull over to the side of the road.
At speeds below 30 mph, the motorists would still have braking and steering functions, he said.
Dealers will inspect the sensor and replace it with a new one free of charge. The recall is expected to begin around Dec. 17, with mailing of notification letters to be completed in phases by May 2008. Owners can contact Ford at (866) 436-7332.

Finally Ford takes care of that. Enough people complaining about it.
I can't knock that 7.3 Ford though, a friend mine has a 97 PSD, with 267k on it, and other than replacing a water pump, his CPS going out 4 times is his only complaint, as he has done nothing else to the truck other than maintaince. (If he had the auto tranny, he'd have that problem though)

What ball joints are you talking about ? There have been recalls on Durangos , Dakotas , and Libertys . Some Libertys have gotten recalls on the recalls . For safety's sake I had my wife's Durango ball joints replaced with Moog products . People should file complaints with NHTSA .
But then again you don't see Chrysler or Cummins anything about the dreaded 53 block either. Or the VP44 pump. I have to give it to Ford, they may take forever, and its like pulling teeth, but at least they finally admit their mistakes.
