I decided to check the air filter today even though my Filter Minder was barely off 0%. It had 33,000 rural (if that makes a difference) highway miles on it. Yeesh! . Pix below shows the old and a fresh one for comparison. That thing's as useless as....(insert your favorite here).

 

YUK! It looks bad but in some cases a dirty looking filter is still working great. Not sure what you have there. My filter minder moves to the about the 30% mark at WOT from day 1. Have not physically checked my filter yet as next month I will be changing to a Scotty.

 

Mine has never moved a millimeter, and my filter is beginning to look like commatozes.<br><br>Seriously thinking about junking the stock box and getting a BHAF very, very soon.<br><br><br>phox

If nothing else it makes me feel better dropping a little $ on a new filter when it looks that bad.

 

mine has moved at all &amp; the filter looks only 1/2 as bad. I guess I'll just look at the filter until I have the bucks for a Scotty.

 

Believe it or not, the dirtier a filter is the more efficient it is. The more dirt the smaller the holes in the filter for dirt to get through. A completely plugged filter is 100% efficient. but it won't let any air through either.<br>Tom

 

I'm not sure I believe it. How can a completely plugged filter (whose function is to pass something thru it while collecting dirt) be 100% efficient when its plugged and not passing anything? And preventing the engine from running properly? Its not a filter anymore, but rather a stop valve. It may be a 100% effective in catching dirt, but I don't think its 100% efficient.<br><br>I'll buy that a non-leaking water valve hooked to my garden hose is efficient.

A completely plugged filter is 100% efficient. but it won't let any air through either.<br>Tom<br>[/quote]<br><br>MnTom is some what correct....a filter that has some dirt is more efficient then a new filter up to a point <br>The filterminder is a great filter tool if its working....to test it just remove it and try sucking on the inlet port if it moves then its working....if its working then use it as a indcater on when to change your filter....any diesel mechainc will tell you he cant look at a filter and say its time to change it if he does then that mechainc is a fool

For reasons like the above I have ordered a vacuum gauge and will monitor that to tell me the condition of my filter.

 

I have yet to see me Filterminder move very much on my Cummins, but like was said earlier, it's good to check if they function. I never knew just how dirty they had to be, but on our Power Strokes at work we have the filter guage mounted inside the cab, and we will go through about 2-4 filters a day. It takes a huge amount of dirt to get that guage pinned to the red. The factory PSD filters are oiled, so they turn dirt to a gummy mess. We have taken filters out and knocked enough dirt out to fill a small zip-lock bag. Just thought I'd share that since most people won't ever get close to that kind of dirt in their filters, eventhough these are PSD's, the filter guage still works the same.<br> Rick

 

Mine maxed out after I put the comp on with the wire tapped. I was pulling my trailer 1oo miles when I got there I was showing my brother where I hooked everything up and noticed it was maxed out. It had a new filter must be the boost I guess.

 

My filter minder doesn't move at all either.
Of couse it's still attached to the stock airbox, sitting where I left it when the Scotty II was installed.
