Dt 466

Like the title says is a DT 466 an inline 6 or a V8 moter. I thought it was a V8 moter. My friends got one in a international spreader truck and always thought it was an 8 but then my dad was looking at a dresher dozer and the guy said it was an 466 but would that make any sense? Are the fairly reliable moters ect.

The old google search pulled up 7.6liter Inline 6 w/30quart lubercatioin system. Cost some serious $$$$$ to change the oil. Anybody got any experience with these moters in heavy equipment.

The DT466 is an inline 6.That family of motors was used in the old International farm tractors (DT360 -DT466).I dont know anything about Dreser dozers but it would surprise me if it did have a DT466 if that helps.

I work on a bunch of them, we have several in our fleet with over 500k well hammered miles. A very reliable engine. I just in chassied one of ours for $4,800 bucks, complete liner kits bearings and 2 injectors, waterpump, front crank seal, all fluids and filters, belts, t-stat.

Had an injector overfuel #3 and wipe out an o-ring on the sleeve taking the engine with it. The newer dt 466 have had some issues, but up until 02, they were the best medium duty engine available. jmo

DT466 is a fairly reliable engine. Not high dollar to work on either. There are several variations of it from no turbo up to ones with electronic injection and turbo. Of course the fancier they get , the more expensive they are, but not bad either way. We have several in the fleet that I maintain. Don't care for working on the "big stuff" ( as I call it! ) , but the engines themselves aren't bad to work on.

The DT466's are good engines. I don't know where they are found in off-road applications but they are common in school buses and international medium duty trucks. Their little sibling the dt360 is similar in basic design to a 5.9 but they are much heavier built. There is also the DT530 which is a bigger version. I can't remember the years but many of the 466's came with the P7100 injection pump.

My dad has had a dump truck and 2 school buses with dt466's. They are a very reliable engine and pretty straight forward to work on. I prefer the earlier non electronic style myself because its simpler

The company I work for has two trucks and both have dt466e engines. The lighter of the two runs tops, but the heavier one probably is not geared low enough and is kind of a dog empty. There both six speeds,so maybe a 530 sized engine would be better.

As for the international instrument clusters, sometimes the speedo works, but the guage lights go on/off all the time. The hour meter works and with 11,000 plus hammering hours those engines get my thumbs up.

'92 to '95 i know had the p7100 pump on them, other years might've snuck out with them, but those are the "official" years i've heard of. A lot of the tractor pullers use them, and they make unreal power numbers with them.

Talking

We had a DT 466 in an International 1950 (i think) 4x4 dump truck, awesome is all I can say, smooth and loads of power, when the turbo would spool on the road it set you back in the seat as much as a dump truck can at least! From what I have heard they are great motors where ever they are called upon.

Thats my .02

In diesel school i rebuilt one from top to bottom and it had 555,000 miles on it. it a state dump truck the mains and rod bearings looked emaculate the reason we took it out in the first place was a oil pan gasket and we decided to bebuild it. mario

Dresser (International) TD-15C dozers do in fact have the DT-466 in them, and I can tell you from experience, the will run forever with proper maintainance. I have one that we bought new in 1979, we rebuilt the motor in 1993, and it's still running today. this isn't a farm type dozer that just ran on occasion either, it may sit for a month or so now and then, but is usually ran everyday, and ran hard. It's getting about time for another overhaul probably, (It'll use a little less than a gallon of oil a day), but still very stout.

Just like the 6bt Cummins, the DT-466 is used in a gazillion things other than trucks. I have had several International trucks over the years with a DT-466. They are great, and will run well over 500,000 miles with out any problems.

We work on quite a few DT's too. Never had any real problems with them, they'll run forever it seems. One thing I have been told though, when doing an oil change on them before restarting it you wanna unplug the crank sensor and then crank it over and build oil pressure. Then plug the crank sensor back in and start it. Something with how and where the oil gets pumped in them, it's bad to start em right up.

Where I used to work is using DT's in dump truck configurations.
They are also using them in service truck configs and they worked great.
They all are auto trannys because the idiots that drive them dont know how to drive standard shift.
The company goes with the low bid and replaces the trucks depending on age not mileage.
There are several DT's that have been replaced with Chevy C 8500 series
