i have a '95 chevrolet 3500HD, 6.5 turbo, 5 speed, with 14 ft flatbed. i would really like to install a dodge cummins in it but can find no info on this conversion. any info appreciated, especially re: computers, using my present 5 spd. trans., body lift for clearance, ANY info. thanks.

 

If you go for a 94-98 12V you really dont have a whole lot of computer stuff to worry about. You frame and front end should be sufficient (not sure about the torsion bars though - a leaf spring/solid diff conversion may be necessary.

As for the engine, Id recommend a 97 or 98 12V - 215 hp and are the most reliable pickup engines that Cummins has made and can be turned up a LOT for cheap.

Sorry, I dont have any links for the conversion. There's a company in Montana that does Cummins/Ford conversions. Maybe they have some info or can handle it.

Might want to do some measurements in the engine compartment. Probably will have a hard time getting the big six cylinder to fit in there.
I did read somewhere (maybe the dieselpage.com) that some people have installed a smaller I6 Isuzu diesel out of the box cab trucks you see running around.

Turbodieselregister.com has a section for conversions. You can read them free. I htink there is a motor-mount that tilts the engine for clearance if you dont want to alter the hood and maybe fire-wall. Some, I think altered the fire-wall for clearance. The guys at Ford-Cummins, I believe have converted other brands, try advance-adaptors to mount it your tranny. Unless you plan on a lot of mods, and heavy loads, you could try going without an inner cooler first to save room, and add the i.c. later if it doesn't make you happy.

 

Without lifting the body off of the fram the innercooler will not fit, I have seen one in a truck as you described and the guy put the cooler out in front of the radiator on a very stout brush guard. Goodluck,,,Rick
