General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

Do you think I can use 2 yr old diesel fuel??

I have 15 gallons of summer diesel stored in plastic fuel containers. One has been in the back of my truck and the 2 are in the garage. The containers have not been opened since I filled them. Two of them were brand new, one was used for additional range occasionally. Each has a measured amount of Power Service white in them.

Do you think I can still use this stuff. It's pre ULSD so it is 300 miles worth. I hate to get rid of it with todays prices.

No it would be illegal!!!
Send it to me I know a special way to dispose of it!!!!!
Of couse it is still good. you may want to check it for algea, but other than that use it. If you have concerns, just use 5 gallons per fill up.

I had an old 500 gallon fuel tank sitting in my bone yard for at least 20 years.
Gave the tank to a friend and told him he should use the 25 or so gallons left in the tank to start his burn pile.
Instead he put it in his Powerstroke, no problems whatsoever.
You'll be fine.

Worst case scenario is algae. Otherwise it doesn't really go bad.

I'd use at least half of it and get rid if the rest. Treat the usable half with biocide and PS911. That should help w/ algae and water. $60 of free fuel compared to thousand of dollars worth the damage to the fuel system.

Now which half would you use? How do you determine the usable half from the other half? Man, maybe I'm up too late!

I'd sure enough burn half, then get rid of the second half the same way, burn it.

Well I just got another 5 gal from my son. He was going to use it in his kerosene heater but it didn't work so he gave me the second 5 of 10 gal he had. It looks dead clear although this is this winter's fuel. It's free so I guess I'll just use it all up a little at a time. I need to change fuel filter anyway. I do have some 911 so I'll add it too as it is opened anyway.

Thanks for the heads up.

All of the reserves our country is stocking back in the caves will end up being alot older than the fuel you are talking about. Thats what were are supposed to live on in a crisis situation....... $4.50 per gal is that a crisis situation??

$4.03 is a crisis for me. I'm going out to dump the first 5 gallons in. It's clean in clear jugs. I'll pour it thru a couple filters first however.

Bottom half is what I'd shy away from. Usually where all the water, dirt, and algae reside.

Throw a little fuel stabilizer in the containers.

I just dumped in the 5 gal my son gave me. It was pouring rain so I tossed a big towel over my head and tucked it in the stake pocket to make a tent over the filler so I wouldn't get rain down the funnel. Paranoid maybe but better stupid looking than looking stupid at road side. haha
It was dead of the winter fuel. Man does that stuff stink. whew. It smells like paint thinner. Well it ran ok and I drove 60 miles with it and no problems. I did add the 2 stroke oil..1 oz per gallon that I've been using.

I'm going to carefully filter the other stuff then let it settle in a clear jug so I can see if there is any water in it. I gave it a sniff just a while ago and it must be winter fuel too. That is ugly smelling stuff, what ever they put in it for the winter.
