I dont know where to put this topic, but does anyone know where a good diesel mechanics school is. I have been thinking of going to school, getting certified and opening my own shop, if I have enough money, but any info would be great.

My cousin went to Wyoming Tech, I think it was called... He said he enjoyed the school, it is in Cheyanne I think... Sorry I don't know more, but he really liked this school, and now works on tractors, semis, and cummins engines...

I went to UTI in Houston, 96-97. Did the Auto and Diesel thing, supposed to be 63 weeks, finished in 51. Doubled up on some classes and tested out of one. Good school, nice to have the degree. But if you have been working on anything and have at least the mental capacity to change a flat tire, don't spend your money. Get a job somewhere as entry level tech and get the OTJ experience. I had always been in the shop with my dad working on Cat's and complete highway trucks. The school was pretty boring to me. The degree helped me get into jobs after school and no doubt I wouldn't have my current job without it, but if you're planning on your own thing don't do it. Get the OTJ experience and then get ASE Cert's, people who pay to have their vehicles worked on care more about the ASE than any tech school you will ever attend.

 

I have heard that WyoTech is a good school. Just what I have heard through the rumor mill, don't know anyone that has gone there.

Come on down to Kaysville and check out the Diesel program at the DATC. I teach automotive Service Technology there and the Diesel shop is right accross the hall. They have a direct link to Volvo and Mack. ANd also do Thermo King.<br><br>

 

Wyoming Tech is in Larmie, WY. I had two highschool buddies go there. Very good school.<br><br>I went to Denver Automotive and Diesel College in Denver. Nice school.

 

TSTC Texas State Tech College. they do anything from 2cycle to Big Rigs and planes.

 

Went to school at the Glendale Hts location of UTI. Pretty good school, expensive but they have a lot of connections when it comes to getting u a job. They have Freightliner as one of there factory training companies. <br>Good place to start. <br><br>Plus they have Hot Rod U. which was pretty cool, best thing about it is the fact that u get to use a inground dyno for free.

 

I am currently going to Oklahoma State Universities Hevi Equipement Vehicle Institute/ Freightliner Service Tech Program. They offer a CAT Program, Komatsu, Ditch Witch, Toyota T Lift, or the Freightliner Program. They have almost 100% job placement rating with paid internship every other 7 weeks at a dealership. If you are wanting to work on the whole truck itself and the big three (Cummins, Detroit, CAT) the Freightliner Program is definately the way to go.<br>http://www.osu-okmulgee.edu/hevi/<br>

Loving NADC (Nashville Auto Diesel College). Our school was recently purchased by Lincoln Tech. They are really starting to do good things too. Check it out. You may like what you see. You are trained in automotive, diesel, thermo king, welding. You get three free ase tests. Free snap-on tools after graduation. There is a dyno on campus and also a high po program if you're into that. 99% job placement rating too.

 

All the diesel schools have their merits...and job placement after school is high....there's a shortage of diesel trained mechanic's and large trucking company's and dealerships recruit from all the diesel schools....after school you will be started as a apprentice mechanic (OJT) then after a short time depending on the company your doing all repairs to the fleet<br><br>I am happy to see new blood interested in this career field...its dirty, heavy, and hard work but at the end of your shift you can go home feeling good that you fixed trucks....I did it for 35 years and never regretted my choice of careers<br><br>Pappy
