Former contract co-worker at our plant and nighttime automotive mechanic took a job with BDHolt locally. He was an excellent mech who deserved to get a CAT job instead of being a contract slave to some sadistic idiots..
Somewhere in the mid twenties/hr STARTING $$ but I know it came with full bennies and advancement opportunities. They called HIM after some mechanic inside Holt knew of his reputation and skill. (they apparently have an internal finders fee system for locating good people.)
He says they(the Corpus Christi shop) are wrenching on BIG oilfield high compression spark ign NAT-GAS CAT engines as fast as they can turn them around. Not an end in sight at this time.
As much overtime as he cares to accept.. Last I saw him this is what he looked like
(Well, TOP doesn't have a Snoopy Smilie doing the "happy dance"... but you get the idea...)

I know that if any of your sons or daughters are wanting to get into the Diesel Mechanic Field, go into the NAVY, support our Country while being taught everything that you will need to know about diesel propelled vehicles and come out smelling like a rose!!! Or go into UPS/Controls and make a killing there too. Only down fall is the fact that these are the type of jobs that are demanding, physical, and very long hours! $$$$ is good though!

All the mines around here are paying eqipment mechanics around 25$ an hour with excellent benefits, 401k, bonuses, etc... They are even giving some pretty impressive sign on bonuses right now. Heck, a kid right outta high school can go to work and rake in 60 grand a year!------anyone interested in working at a gold mine pm me and I'll get you an application.

Thanks Guys
I'm hoping that I will be making around at least $15 for first year apprentice, if a little lower that's ok too. I'm just going to work for a year right now, then apply to college for Diesel Mechanic probably. Just as long as there are good places around here to work at (Ontario)

A mecanic here in Norway make from $25 TO $35 an hour. And he pay 30 to 35 % tax. Diesel is $ 7 for a us galon.
But if you go offshore to the oilfields in the north sea you can make from $80000 to $130000 a year depending on overtime. (but its over 40 % tax )
In the northsea we have a 2 week on and 4 week of scedule.

I'm going on being 3 years out of school now and I am making $22.00 per hr, plus OT, and benefits. I work as a Diesel Locomotive machinist for a for a major shortline RR in Chicago, I am in a union, and I don't pay into SS. Instead I pay a little more money per check in to the Railroad Retirement Fund. My benefits are excelent and the work is very good. For being 23 yrs old I'm not doing too bad, I don't plan on making only this much my whole life, after gaining some good expierence I plan on moving to a better salary a year.

Im going to a Diesel Mechanic school in Grand Prairie when I graduate High School. The school is called LincolnTech if anyones ever heard of it... 18 month school that garuntees a job after graduating. I plan on coming back to my home town and working on the local farmers and my fathers equipment... I dont plan on making it a full time job, just something to have...

A lot of you grads are making good dollar for begining in the auto/diesel trades. It was nowhere that good when I first started 30+ years ago even with adjusted for inflation. I am slowing down now but at the peak I made 100,000 to 120,000 a year. I am down a lot now because the body wont keep up anymore. Like everything else that wears out, you got go easy on it or it blows up.

Good luck.

I'M GETTING HOSED! I've been working for a Cat dealer as a truck engine tech for 5 years. I have every certification/training a tech can get and I just got a raise that puts me at $19/hr! That also puts me very near the salary cap for this dealer; I believe it's about $20/hr. Maybe it's just Pa. I don't know. Is it that much more expensive to live elsewhere? It takes everything I got to make the payments on my truck. Someone tell me where to go and I'm packing the bags and making tracks!(and soot )

The way that I always heard it when I was in diesel school was that pay was inverse to conditions - nice shop working on OTR/fairly good pay - muddy conditions working on off-road/better pay - out in the middle of nowhere working on oil & gas rigs/best pay.

I decided not to wear my body out and got a job working with computers so I don't get paid for working on my Cummins.

Diesel mech need has exceeded supply in most parts of country so pay is pretty good . I know so many mechanics who have gotten out of biz it's not even funny ...... myself included . Most become drivers just get tired of the b.s and politics .

I have been around Cummins engines since birth (grandpa was a service manager for Cummins of Shreveport and pops worked for them and KW ) and tried staying away from oily diesels and got my FAA Airframe & Powerplant license and still ended up working on OTR trucks ,medical equipt and then concrete mixers .

If I could pull down a 6 figure salary would probably still be doing it but I am content working on my " mini Cummins " and enjoying not having grease under my nails 24/7 !!! Outlook looks fantastic for a competent "MECHANIC " just way too many " PARTS CHANGERS " out there .

Just my 2 cents good luck !!!
