Why do people leave their diesel trucks running when in & out of places?

 

Because of two reasons, one starting is hard on any engine. And two, most of the time they are run pretty hard whether solo or pulling, it is better for any turbo-equipped engine to idle for a minute or so, if not until exh temps drop down, just to keep the turbo happier. Too many hot shutdowns without proper cooling of turbo housing can "coke" oil onto internal bearings/bushings of turbo shaft. This coking can cause premature seal and/or bearing failure. Lots of people never cool down, but it has always been a reccomended practice my any diesel or turbo engine OEM.

'Course, extended idling is not necessarily good, either. If I'm just going to run in for a minute, and I'm not cooled down, I let it run. If I know it's going to be more than a few minutes, I give it time to cool, and shut down. I've carried two keys for the last 14 years, just for this purpose.<br><br>This is a great place to get educated, Ruben. Welcome.

 

If your going to keep it idleing while running in, always fun to park it by the pay phones <br><br>Same as above statements.<br>I take the keyless with me and lock the doors if I'm just running in and keeping it running.<br><br><br>phox

I stopped at our corner store about a mile away and turned up the idle while I was inside, a guy walks in and says&quot; who owns that noisy truck outside&quot;...I smiled and said &quot;me&quot;..it does sound great.....he started busting my ***** about other issues and as I walked outside and saw a guy on the pay phone with his finger in his ear I realized why...now if he had asked me I could have shut er down...but nooo...

Most people that complain are gassers!! :'( so true about the drive-thu, I haven't been to a drive-thu since I got my Cummins, first they can't hear anything at all second my Ram doesn't fit there overheads. but I wouldn't have it any other way ;D <br>If its not a Diesel its not a truck!!

 

I solved the &quot;idle question&quot; by putting on an Ispro turbo saver. I can turn off the ignition and lock it up and if i'm gone too long it will shut off when the egt is down to 300 deg. If i'm back before them, I put the key back in and turn it on (not to the start possition) and keep on truck'n. It is fun to watch people when the truck shuts off by it's self.

Hey ET, where and how much did you get your Ispro turbo saver, I'm all up to freek people out with my diesel I already do with the remote starter. ;D
