I will say it again, make sure they are well north of 30 MPG and I am interested.

The wife and I went looking at the GC a couple of weeks ago. Found one we liked but dealer didnt want to play ball. Walked away. Glad I did now. Looks like its gonna be a 3.0 V6

My parents bought a 2008 3.0L diesel grand cherokee brand new and aside from a couple of dipstick o-rings leaking (warranty) its been a flawless vehicle. The highest fuel economy we've seen with it is 30mpg hand calculated, usually in the mid to high 20s. Its a pretty cool engine, very quiet and loads of power. Stomp on it from a dead stop and about half a second later the turbo spools and the all wheel drive launches you

Same folks that make the 2.8L I4 in my day driver Liberty. VM Motori of Italy makes very good engines. Not unlike the Ram CTD, the Liberty has more issues than the engine in it. Good enough for me, and it came from TX so no rust issues. The VM engine is fairly common in Europe between GM and Fiat products. They've had 2.5 and 2.8s in Jeeps in Europe for years.

According to allpar's article http://www.allpar.com/mopar/V6/VM-RA-diesel.html much of the "emissions" is built into the fuel system. Oh, and good luck disabling the EGR. Sounds easier said than done, according to this article.
Cast-iron exhaust manifolds funnel exhaust to a close-coupled diesel oxidation (SiMoCr cast iron) catalyst and standard diesel particulate filter. Euro 5 emissions are met through an exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) system that includes an EGR valve with DC motor and a high-performance EGR cooler with bypass valve. Each cylinder has a central direct injector with cooled EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) as an integral part of the cylinder heads. The vacuum pump is incorporated into one of the camshafts for greater efficiency.

Yeah, that was pretty much a ribbing on me for messing so much with the 6.7 Bluetec systems. Someone would have to make a programmer that would allow the hardware to be removed. Or a lot of experimenting with sims and sensors and such.
If I get one of these for the wife, it will stay stock, with extended warranty purchases. That way when Im away, and if something happens, the dealer can fix it.
