diesel fuel additives
diesel fuel additives
I am looking for thoughts and recomendations on diesel fuel additives.

Are they necessary and what brands do you like or dislike?

Thanks
Re:diesel fuel additives
I don't think additives are necessary if you purchase a quality fuel.

BP/Amoco here sells premier diesel, and according to the literature they've given me, it's minimun 50 cetane rated, complete with "guardian package" which contains all additives for lubricity, cold starting etc., at pump price.

They were the only station here, that provided info on their product. Hence, they're the one's I patronize, without having to buy additional additives.
Re:diesel fuel additives
I like to use additive in every tank. Mostly because I don't fuel up at the same place everytime so fuel quality is always in question.
If you don't know the quality of the fuel, any additive is better than no additive.
I usually use Howes fuel treatment, but last week I found a good deal.
While shopping with the wife at the local dollar store, there sat STP diesel anti-gel and fuel conditiner. It was in gallon containers, for $1.00 per gallon! One gallon treats up to 400 gals summer, 200 gals winter.
Wife will not take me to the dollar store anymore.
;D ;D ;D
Re:diesel fuel additives
My local supplier was out of Howes Diesel-Treat, so I've had to use Power-Service white bottle for the last month.
I've noticed an increase in engine noise (possibly attributed to colder weather, but have noticed the same in summer) since using the P-S additive.
Supplier finally received their shipment of Howes, I now have a case of it on the shelf in the Toybox. ;D
I use it every tank for piece-of-mind and additional lubrication for the "fragile" VP injection pump.

Like someone mentioned above - DC says you dont need it.. AND Cummins says if you want to use it you have to use their brand of winterizer and/or additive.. they dont offer a dual use additive..

Someone posted a link a while back to Cummins position on all additives (winterizer, lubricant, etc) but i dont remember where i found it..

I try to buy fuel at high volume truck stops but Im als adding PS at each fueling just as a good measure in the cold.. Certainly dont want to run into problems with gelling if it gets really cold.

Just finished a bottle of Power Service never noticed a differance. Gonna run a tankful with nothing next, then try Standadyne. Don't leave PS unsecure in your cab, the cap doesn't seal!
Don

I use power service because last year when it got a little cold 0* my fuel in my ford gelled and it was a pita to get going I do not want to go through that again and ps say they will pay the tow bill if it is properly used and fuel gells so that satisfied me with their product. Also on my ford there was a noticable power increase and black smoke decrease power was up enough to allow me to pull my fifth wheel in a higher gearup the passes. I have not noticed a power difference in the dodge but it does seem to have less smoke.
